DMT for depression

swim has been on two or three different antidepressants, and they all made him feel even worse than normal. the best drug for his (somewhat mild) depression has turned out to be DMT. hes only smoked it a handfull of times, but its always made him so much more content with life in general, even 2-3 months after smoking. he just feels that the world isnt as sinister as he has always felt it is after doing this drug. swim knows of the supposed therapeutic effects of MDMA, LSD, and Psylocybin, and has experienced them, but not to the extent of DMT. also, during the comedown after smoking, he feels INCREDIBLY introspective and so much more able to get to the root of his problems and try to solve them than any other psychedelic. does anyone else feel the same? DMT has massively helped swim live his life to the fullest, and just wonders if it is the drug or swim's affinity for the drug.

p.s. swim has UTFSE but didnt come up with anything, if this has been covered he's sorry and would appreciate a link to the proper thread.

Re: DMT for depression

As long as the dmt experience isn't frightening as it is for some people.....swim totally agrees.

For swim...the trip is usually pretty hectic...but the comedown is very very unique.

First of all, swim comes down to an incredible euphoria...and not a normal one, it's one where swim genuinely loves and appreciates just about everything he senses....if swim thinks about a troubling issue, it gives him a completely different perspective.

And unlike other drugs of the sort.....for swim.....dmt brings him up very high, but when he comes back to baseline...he stays there, rather than going lower. The insight swim learns while on DMT are usually not unreasonable or impulsive, swim can come back to baseline and keep the perspectives he had on DMT....this is very unique. Unlike typical mood lifters, where one feels worse than before after the comedown.

SWIM wouldn't say that it's the affinity fort the drug...it could be for some people...but for swim there was never a time where swim felt the urge to use DMT. When deciding to do DMT....it just felt like the right time to do it.

this is basically what swim is trying to say. swim hasnt had any bad trips on DMT (although im sure he will eventually, the first time he saw anyone smoke DMT it looked like a motherfucking HORRIBLE experience, and apparently it was considering the test subject's report of the trip) but felt like his life was.... worthwhile maybe? death (and subsequently life itself) isnt something to be feared? he doesnt know how to put it, but just feels that the regular anxiety over life itself is completely unsubstantiated.

Re: DMT for depression

^^There have been some studies showing that regular DMT administration leads to an upregulated of a seretonin receptors in the brain which may have something to do with the long lasting depression relief. Sorry don't have the source on me right now.

Could you please look for that study?
I recall studies associating depression relief with ayahuasca use, however that was due to the MAOI component.
If DMT itself caused receptor upregulation it would be really neat.

Re: DMT for depression

DMT alone is risky for use in depression. It could give you an amazing heart warming experience, but it could also bring you to complete hell and beyond.

What about tetrahydroharmine (THH)? That's in caapi. A few people on another forum claim that tetrahydroharmine improved their mood for several days after taking it. Tetrahydroharmine is a weak SSRI and a weak MAOI (RIMA actually), so it would make sense that it would work as an anti-depressant.

swim understands this, and doesnt use DMT for depression, it just happened to be an unexpected side effect. swim has had a couple of bad trips on other substances, and while he realizes a bad trip on DMT could potentially be worse than anything he has experienced, he isnt particularly concerned about it (regarding the after-effects). hes taken LSD and mushrooms upwards of ~40 times and understands the risks but they have never had an adverse effect on his depression (quite the opposite), including his bad trips. it just struck swim as very surprising that unlike LSD, mushrooms, and 2c-i his mood was lifted for more than a month after dosing on DMT. like swim said, he has pretty mild depression, and doesnt think its much worse than what most people experience.

swim has actually just recently started to read up on THH (primarily due to its role in traditional ayahuasca brews), and it sounds like a very interesting chemical. he would very much like to experiment with it.
