A DATE-RAPE drug or horse tranquilliser could have caused the collapse of a man in a valley pub.
The 39-year-old local man was taken to hospital in a critical condition after an incident at the Blaenllynfi Hotel in Caerau on Sunday afternoon.
His condition was said to be improving yesterday (Wednesday).
The pub was closed after two men collapsed on Sunday afternoon.
The 39-year-old was found unconscious in the toilets and was taken by ambulance to the Princess of Wales Hospital, where he was put on a life support machine. The other made a full recovery.
Police would not confirm rumours circulating locally that the men had been taking GHB, known as the “date-rape” drug, or horse tranquilliser Ketamine.
Three men were arrested in connection with the incident and have been released on deferred bail.
Locals said detectives with sniffer dogs had also been spotted in Caerau Park on Sunday.
One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said initially people feared the man was dead.
“There was a big guy in the ambulance who looked totally out of it,” she said.
“There was a big commotion for a Sunday with two ambulances, five police cars – they were there for hours.
“The pub is not usually any trouble.”
Police are appealing for witnesses to ring ****** or Crimestoppers anonymously on **** ********.
GHB has been used as a general anaesthetic to treat insomnia, clinical depression, narcolepsy, and alcoholism.
But it is also used illegally and is popular on the rave scene as an intoxicant or date rape drug.
Users can experience an alcohol-like high with potent positive sexual effects.
Ketamine, also a Class C drug, is a short-acting general anaesthetic which depresses the nervous system and causes a loss of body sensation.
It is sold in powdered or liquid form, and is used for treating humans and animals. It has powerful hallucinogenic and painkilling qualities, and users often report ‘dissociative’ feelings in which mind and body seem to separate. It is most dangerous when taken with alcohol or other depressants.

I hate the term date rape drug, by definition alcohol has been used to date rape women since it was created. Hell even some men have probably woke up to a woman and thought what the hell am i doing next to this. Even I have had women approach me buy me alchol all night and then ride me.

Using ignorant, fear-mongering terms too, I see. Sorry, I consider alcohol the "date rape" drug. How many people do we know assaulted with GHB? How many people do we know assaulted with alcohol?

And how many horses are tranquilized with ketamine? Are these Pulitzer prize winning journalists aware ketamine was used on people BEFORE animals, including horses?
