SWIM read on wiki answers that butalbital has roughly the same solubility in water as acetaminophen, thus rendoring a CWE useless and ineffective.
SWIM also read in another forum that butalbital's solubility in water is 1700mg/liter. There is also a thread on this site saying CWE's on butalbital do work. Im really confused here, does anybody know the real solubility of butalbital? Source? Has any1 actually tried a CWE on fiorcet/esgic (butalbital)? Please help ASAP!!! |

Re: Butalbital water solubility? Please help!!
The free acid of Butalbital is highly unsoluble in water, but the Sodium salt of Butalbital is highly soluble in water. Dissolving Sodium Hydroxide(lye) in water and adding crushed and powdered Butalbital/Paracetamol composition tablets to it with heavy stirring will cause the Butalbital free acid in the tablets to turn into the water soluble Sodium salt and dissolve into solution, while the Paracetamol stays undissolved. It can then be easilly seperated by pouring it through a coffee filter. The unsoluble binders along with the Paracetamol will stay behind in the filter, while the dissolved Sodium Butalbital and dissolved binders can be collected in a cup or beaker. After filtering, concentrated hydrochloric acid should be added to the filtered Sodium Butalbital solution to precipitate the Butalbital as it's free acid. The precipitated Butalbital free acid can now be collected by pouring the mixture through a coffeefilter, leaving the pure Butalbital behind in the coffee filter.

Re: Butalbital water solubility? Please help!!
Where would one acquire highly concentrated hydrochloric acid & sodium hydroxide (lye)? no specific source, just in general
& SWIM is assuming fiorcet tablets (50mg butalbital/325 acetaminophen/ 40mg caffeine) have the water soluble form of butalbital, right? |

Re: Butalbital water solubility? Please help!!
Lye is caustic soda (ammonium hydroxide), an extremely common, and widely available drain-cleaner (think pretty much any hard-ware store).
The flamingo believes (but does not know for sure) that hydrochloric acid is also called muriatic acid, which is commonly found in toilet cleaners etc. |

Re: Butalbital water solubility? Please help!!
& these substances are safe for human consumption!?! SWIM would think not
Or would filtering through coffee filters, eliminate these by products? again SWIM would think not This whole process would seem much easier without lye and hydrochloric acid, are these steps absolutely necessary or will a simple CWE suffice for removing acetaminophin and not caffeine or butalbital?
