Short Term Morphine use and having trouble

I am a 38 y/o male being treated for a G.I. problem. I have been on Morphine Sulfate Imm rel since second week of october. I take 15-30mg every 8 hours for pain. 4 days ago I decided to get my family out of the house and go for a drive, well before I knew I was going to drive I considerable cut my dose and dealt with the pain. Two days ago I had symptoms of opiate withdrawl, sweating chills, diareah, vomitting, runny nose. I told myself while this was going on that I was not taking a pill to correct this feeling. I refuse to deal with this with more Morphine. I dont drink, smoke, or have any addictions. For the past 2 days I have done pretty welll except I get these moments of where I can find what would sooth my feelings. I am not suicidal just want to reach out and grab what would make me comforatable. I went to my Doctor yesturday and he prescribed me Tramadol for my GI pain, and a friend of mine started to take Tramadol to help the opiate withdrawal. I also take Xanax .5mg like 2 times a week just to get me off the edge of my normal anxiety.

I am wandering here on my subject, but I hope you understand. I have Tramadol and Xanax and one of the 2 I take both at the same time. I am not sure which one is really helping me through the withdrawal feelings.

Can anyone suggest to me what to do to get me through the crying sessions and feeling of nothing is comfortable ? Is ok to take the Xanax and Tramadol, will I have withdrawl from these?

Thanks and God Bless you all.

Re: Short Term Morphine use and having trouble

Xanax is a benzodiazepine which can cause quite nasty withdrawals if taken regularly enough. These withdrawals from benzos are even worse than opiate withdrawals.

Both the Xanax and tramadol will help ease your withdrawal symptoms and should also help you sleep.

Withdrawal symptoms from Alprazolam (xanax)

Possible/Less Common Withdrawal Symptoms
The withdrawals from the opiates should last from 4 to 7 days.

You are better of doing the withdrawal than taking further opiates. Going in the shower or bath tends to soothe opiate withdrawal. Try that for a while nd take the Xanax to help you sleep.

Re: Short Term Morphine use and having trouble

Hey having read up on Tramadol I have found out that this is also an opiate so although this will make the withdrawal more bearable it will also elongate it!!! It is an opioid

Here is a link

Re: Short Term Morphine use and having trouble

Speak to a dr and do as directed. He will probably replace the morphine with a titration of another opiate. Both alprazolam and tramadol will help with the with drawl. But it is not a good idea to use those to get off the morphine. You will wind up addicted to those. And do not take anything not as directed by your dr.

Swiy suggest taking some immodium for your stomach. Hot showers will help also. It may seem bad but in reality it only is fly like symptoms for 3 or 4 days. Your a big boy and can handle it.

Consult your dr. Do not take medication if not directed to. Good luck.

Remember immodium. Hot showers... Just try it! it works. Swim promises!

Unhappy Re: Short Term Morphine use and having trouble

yea my Doctor was so quick to treat me with Morphine. The last Dr I saw gave me Tramadol to help with my GI pain. I told him I refuse to take Morphine or any type of pill to make me psychologically better. I needed help for pain but this is what I get in return. I was literally taking it as prescribed 15-30mg every 8 hours. I have very strong will power to not take it. I actually flushed the Morphine down the toilet tonight. I am sorry for giving it to the fish. I am a very emotional person, so these withdrawl symtoms just take me under hard. I am currently only taking a .5 mg of Xanax to help me sleep and it makes my mind clear and helps me through the Opiate withdrawal. Which I am only having frustration with not being comfortable and negative thoughts. No suicidal...just negative feelings, and uncontrollable crying. I just want these feelings to go away and be how I was before my Dr gave me this crap. I am willing to have pain than to be psychologically uncomfortable.

I pray that this goes away soon. I did have a pretty good appetite tonight and had 3 slices of pizza, which I have had no appetite lately. I think I am on the downhill run....I hope....I am really hoping. The morph is gone, but I need a slight dose a Xanax for these few days to get me through.............Is that OK......Really truly ok...Just a few more days. Please help me get though this........

Re: Short Term Morphine use and having trouble

Short term use of Xanax is fine, but be aware of it's addiction potential with long term use. The worst of the morphine withdrawal should be over by the 4th day, but if you see your Doctor before then you could ask for some Clonidine, it is usually used for high blood pressure but it really helps with withdrawal, especially the feeling of being uncomfortable in your own skin. Good luck, I'm sure with your determination you will pull through this fine.

Clonidine is an alpha-adrenergic agonist, not a beta-blocker.
