The difference between Valium (Diazepam) and Xanax (Alprazolam)

Can someone please explain the differences between the two and the effects as well. Swim is new to the benzos and is still trying to figure it out especially after a very bad over dose of xanax. Also swim would like to know about other benzos if you could. Thanks.

Re: The difference between valium and xanax

SWiM far prefers valium (diazepam) over xanax (alprazolam), as xanax is a hell of a lot stronger and seems to have greater amnesic effects in SWiM, though much of this is due to the difference in doses in his experience.

Check out the equivalency table for a general idea of how the benzos relate potencywise. For SWiM just 5 mg of diazepam is enough, any more is overkill.

Re: The difference between Valium and Xanax

They come on differently, Valium has a lot longer half life, as to where Xanax has a half life of up to 16 hours maximum SWIM believes... and SWIM believes Valium runs somewhere around 40 hours... this is all off the top of SWIMS head so don't trust all info. anyway the Valium is less potent, and most will say 1mg of Xanax is equivalent to about 20mgs of Valium. SWIM personally prefers Xanax because of years of using Lorazepam, Clonazepam, Diazepam, Alprazolam seems to suit SWIM the best. best of luck to you, and be careful when using Benzos, especially Xanax or Klonopin. Two very potent.

Re: The difference between Valium and Xanax

Please use pharmaceutical names, doing so avoids confusion on this international forum

Xanax is Alprazolam, a quick onset, relatively short acting drug, which is used in the treatement of anxiety. As a result of it's short acting nature, it's use is often associated with rebound anxiety.

Valium is Diazepam, a slower onset, extremely long acting drug, which is sometimes used to treat anxiety, and which tends to be used for tapering purposes in Benzodiazepine withdrawal

There are many threads on Alprazolam and Diazepam for various purposes, including (but not limited to) these...
