Shroom hunting Best Time of Year for Mushroom Hunting

hey looking to go shroom hunting but been told there not around this time of year can anyone help? thanks

Perhaps you should look in the mushroom forum rather than post in the "about members" forum. I think you'll find lots of information there. Also please be sure to note our rules concerning self incrimination; possession of psilocybin mushrooms is a criminal offense... though by "shrooms" I'm sure you're talking about bolets or something.

Week ago, my pet hedgehog went in the woods again, and found like twenty psilocybe arcanas. Though shroomtime is almost over, half of them was fresh and young. On the other hand, there were some pretty big old ladies

Swim thinks September (late) October and November are the best times but psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty cap) can still be found in December.

There might be others.. Just make sure swiy knows what he is doing... As the wrong mushroom can kill.

The best things are the internet, books and spore printing.

So would SWIM be able to find any type growing this time of year, hes sure someone told him they do grow all year round, just best at sep/oct/nov i guess?

There are none to be found at the minute. Liberty caps can be found on pastures from late September through to November. Also, at the same time of year Wavy caps can be found growing primarily on wood chips - especially in and along the perimeter of mulched plant beds in urban areas. SWIY be careful though, there are a lot of poisonous lookalikes which grow in the same habitat. If SWIY is not 100% certain he knows what he is doing, it is best just to leave them. Also from late summer through autumn SWIY can find Fly Agarics under pine trees. These are not psychedelic though, but they are deliriants, and they are quite toxic and have to be prepared in a certain way before SWIY can eat them. From what SWIM's leprechaun tells him, the trip isn't all that good anyway.

SWIM recomends, fields with horses in. in Cumbria last year SWIM found a great deal in late October. be very careful, a good indicator is a very prominent nipple on top. most common field mushrooms dont have one. Also white brown stalks, darnking towards the top. And if its wet the caps will be really sticky. If its dry swim should lick his finger and rub the top, see if it become sticky.. Once you find shrooms, swim should become quickly adept at working out what is and what isnt... consult internet for photos. And Swim would recomend. "A guide to British Psilocybin mushrooms" by Richard Cooper. Its available on amazon.

Also, the cap should be almost translucent around the margin such that swiy can see the gills underneath. Swiy should be able to wrap the stem around his finger. They will bruise blue. The gills will be crowded and purple brown. Spore print will be dark purple brown.
