Nitrous hurting your tongue?
hey all,
I know someone who has done Nitrous a bunch of times, when he did it, he did it straight for hours and blew through about 3 boxes worth. He does it straight out of a whip cream dispenser, no balloon. anyway on 2 seperate occasions, about a day or 2 after doing them, he said his tongue looks as if it is burned. He said he has a little bit of soreness and that his tongue is both red and a little white spotty. anyone know if that could be the issue or if they know of someone this happen to? thanks jerry45 added 4 Minutes and 7 Seconds later... btw - I meant he loads a cartridge in an empty whip cream dispenser. not full whip cream cans. jerry45 added 0 Minutes and 18 Seconds later... btw - I meant he loads a cartridge in an empty whip cream dispenser. not full whip cream cans. Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
its because of the extreme cold from the gas.
remember you gas law equation from chemistry PV=NRT P=pressure V=Volume N=amount present R= gas constant T= tempature. so, it you decrease the pressure to 1 atm (from what ever it is) and infinitely increase the volume, the temperature will drop to keep the equation balanced. |

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
Are you taking it straight from the dispenser? Use a balloon and Dr Phil would assume that the problem will stop

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
So he's getting cold burns from the nitrous.
Tell him to use a balloon, you get much more out of your cartridges that way too. |

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
You don't even need a balloon, a plastic grocery bag will work just fine. If you're going to go for balloons, make sure to get the biggest ones you can and stretch them out real good. Re-breath the gas, in and out in the bag till you need to breath for real, you'll find the gas goes much farther.
Be glad you only hurt your tongue. Pressurized gas like that can freeze much deeper into the lungs, damaging all the parts in between. Bloody lucky you are. Don't ever do that again. |

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
Although in relation to the OP a plastic bag would be a potential improvement, it could also potentially be a VERY bad idea.
A balloon when deflated is a very small piece of rubber that unless actually inhaled it would be difficult for it to block the air way. There is also more than a 50% chance that at the point one nos'es out or looses consciousness it will be full of exhaled gas and so will fly far away as SWIY loses their grip on it. Plastic bags on the other hand will not fly away and can EASILY cause suffocation, especially to someone who is unconscious, and so should not be used, and avoided at all cost if SWIY is alone using nitrous. Balloons have the added advantage of to some degree at least pushing the gas back into you, this takes some effort out of nitrous use and enables the nitrous adventurer to explore deeper into the world of nitrous. Seriously how much do balloons cost? Go Buy Balloons! Then when SWIY would never consider using anything but balloons, they will probably also have developed a preference over; balloon size, ring size, rubber thickness, ease of inflation. And SWIY will be sure to know where to acquire their balloons of choice, and spot unsuitable low quality balloons a mile off. SWIM at some point in life may have thought about nitrous and its use/abuse for a little to long... please excuse him. Peace Geezaman |

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
Good point Geezaman, not something that ever came up as nitrous alone never seemed like a jolly good time, nobody prefers to have friends around. Last time nobody had the stuff, the only balloons availible were rather small and seemed to fill up to fast and extra gas escaped when removed.
Punch Balloons is where it's at. The long ridged ones that have a rubber band on them. Big, east to fill, rugged rubber, sadly hard to find in these days of electronic amusements. |

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
Internet based auction sites usually seem to have good balloons fairly cheap, although of course you never see what you get till it arrives.
Although SWIM for along time preferred the punch bag ones, he now prefers those described as "large helium balloons" they seem to be able to hold upto 5 chargers/caps/nangs/whippets of nitrous like the punch bag balloons. SWIM prefers these because this is because the ring on them fits better around SWIMs dispenser, and also around the empty capsule/nang/whippet/cap if SWIM is preparing a few in advance. They are easier to re-inflate with recycled nitrous under lung power the punch bag ones in comparison sometimes seemed a little difficult. 5 large helium balloons each containing 4 whippets of nitrous and one empty balloon (for ease of consumption of the other 5) is truly a beautiful thing, and a good night in! SWIM agrees with SWInobody that nitrous with friends is much better than alone it truly brings a party feel, while also completely disrupting any actual party ![]() Peace Geezaman |

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
Yeh, if you use the type of balloons they sell for helium you can re-use and re-use but also fill more than one charger in them. Usually SWIM doesn't bother and just gets a box of cheapo pound shop baloons, or straight from the dispenser if he's doing like a box in one go although its harder to maintain the really intense high you get from re-inhaling that way.

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
Guys, when SWIY fills N2O from the cart. to the ballon how long should pass before administering it as it's very cold straight away? 20 seconds?

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
SWIM buys punch balloons in preferably pink and light blue
, 2 for $1 at Walgreens in the toys section.SWIM told me they work perfectly, fitting right over the tulip nozzle of the dispenser that he unscrews and screws back on between filling the balloons. The pink balloons looks like a bird with big eyes when he's inhailing from it. SWIM named the bird TWEETY, but all TWEETY does is stare at him while inhaling.. |

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
Definitely use a balloon when doing nitrous of any kind.
If not possible, SWIM has found that the risk of tongue freeze goes in this order (from most risky to least): 1. Cracker 2. Whipped cream maker 3. Whipped cream can 4. Tank (medical or food grade only) |

Re: Nitrous hurting your tongue?
SWIM was doing nitrous directly from the cracker, (
yea stupid idea) and burned her lips and tongue pretty badly, breaking the skin and causing some bleeding. SWIM did only balloons after that. The last couple of times SWIM did nitrous she didn't feel so well and had to lay down. SWIM has decided to not do it anymore since feeling sick isn't enjoyable and kind of defeats the purpose.
