Whoa. SWIY is coming off as extremely self-righteous and judgmental in this post. SWIM doesn't know if he caught an STD this way, or if he's never actually had any experience with IVing heroin, so harbors the same ignorant prejudices as the majority of the non-using population, but SWIY sounds overly bitter, and his statement propagates untrue stereotypes.
First of all, SWIM works at a needle exchange, and has seen an extremely diverse community of users, from the homeless and street sex workers to professors and physicians. Of all these individuals, SWIM has yet to meet ANYONE who shares drug paraphernalia, even tourniquets, as many harm reduction programs allow users to take unlimited amounts of syringes and other works. Has SWIY even been to a needle exchange since the 1980s?
Second, SWIM doesn't even know what to make of SWIY's statement that "drug users are notoriously lapse about protection, we all know this." This belief is so prejudiced, and it's bullshit to characterize an entire community based on the alleged behavior of a few individuals. If anything, being an IV drug user and having sex with anyone else, whether user/non-user, makes an individual MORE concerned about protection. Many in the harm reduction community live by the motto "FUCK SAFE AND SHOOTCLEAN" ,including SWIM. Since she started using heroin, SWIM has been in two monogamous relationships with fellow IV users, and the very first thing she did before any sexual activity was take herself and partner to PP for a complete battery of tests to prove to each other that they were clean, and she STILL used a condom every single time. SWIM regularly gets tested (ditto for her partners) and she has yet to contract any diseases.
Finally, SWIY seems to believe that all IV heroin users engage in risky sex with a great deal of partners and no protection. SWIM is inclined to believe SWIY has not actually IV'ed heroin, as his viewpoints are characteristic of an individual who is relatively inexperienced with H and its effects. As anyone can see from the numerous posts in this thread, heroin is hardly an aphrodisiac drug, and tends to lessen sexual function and desire in most users. Furthermore, heroin does not impair judgment facilities to the extent that other drugs do, and most heroin users remain relatively "sober" mentally when they are under the influence, as the drug is very similar in molecular structure to endorphins, and actually very gentle on one's mind and body when used long-term. SWIM has observed a LOT more casual and unprotected sexual activity among drunk people than heroin users. And even among the rare number of individuals who have increased sexual desires while using heroin, it's realtively minor, and doesn't lead the majority into unsafe sexual situations. SWIM has yet to meet a user (including herself) that shoots H, and suddenly gets the craving to go suck on a stranger's pus-filled genital warts.

I can kinda understand just what you're saying, cos the first thing any heroin user thinks of when they open their eyes is "where is my heroin coming from today?" Everything (and everyone) do tend to play runner up when you have a heroin habit to support, they have to. If you don't get what you need to just stop you getting sick (at the least) then those same relationships suffer even more.
At the time it really doesn't feel like you're choosing one over the other, but if you really think about it, and you're honest with yourself, then yes, you are. Sparkles did. It kinda warped (or changed) the way she thought about people and things. Her main goal was to just be normal (for her) and not dope sick. Then she could function in a relationship.
It put a lot of strain on a relationship when one uses and the other doesn't, usually if both people use the relationship does become a little unhealthy and quite codependent. And yeah, it's easy to have a relationship with someone when you're using, but a healthy one, I'm not too sure. Cos when Sparky was married (he ex never used) the marriage broke down purely cos he said he came second to heroin, and he was right he did.
When two people are using you tend to lie to each other about your use, the reasons, and why you don't wanna quit, perhaps that's why it's so difficult for two users to quit together? Having said that, Sparky has had some of her most beautiful relationship moment, the closest she's ever had, with other users, cos I suppose you have a huge thing in common? And it's kinda like you and them against everyone else.
The other thing that brought Sparky very close to one ex who was also a user was him hitting her up. That's an extremely close thing to have with someone. You're totally vulnerable, and allowing them to do something that is usually quite private for most users. It felt like all of her barriers were gone, as she allowed this person to connect with her, via a rig. It's almost a sexual thing on it's own. Does that make sense?
