Reducing harm done by opiates to a VERY important organ...
So whenever a random guy on the road makes pod tea, or takes a higher dose of vicoden/percs/oxy's, he has trouble urinating. Also passing number 2 becomes a challenge. Even more scary is most of the time the random bum can not become aroused or perform sexually. He thinks this is fairly common with opiates, but is wondering if he is permanantly damaging his fun parts. Hw would like to know if there is anyway possible to reduce the harm done by the drugs....
other than taking less, or less frequently |

The bum is fine, all those effects are normal and will go away as soon as the bum comes down off the pain-killers

R_T is correct. All of the above mentioned (as far as modern pharmacology and science have come to know) are merely short term side effects of opioid use. Urinary retention, constipation, and decreased libido are all things SWiYour doctor would most likely inform you about upon prescribing anything alike.

Ok that;s great news I'll let the bum under the bridge know. So, there really is no way to help yourself urinate while on opiates?

Re: Reducing harm done by opiates to a VERY important organ...
My apologies! I forgot it was the bum we were dealing with, not a swimmer.
In swim's experience there is really no way to effectively help yourself urinate while on opiates, unfortunately. But, it's always a good idea for the bum to drink lots and lots of water (6-8 FULL glasses a day) while on opioids. This will cause more water to be released into his stool (therefore making it easier to pass, and relieving constipation), and more obviously make him have to pee more frequently! If he's standing at the toilet for more than 5 minutes unsuccessful, it may be time for him to get checked out. |

try using the forum search engine for ideas on how to help alleviate the problems with going to the bathroom (especially #2) as there are certain things one can take....as for #1, like what has been pointed out already, SWIY will be more able to once they come down from the high

Yes, these are normal side effects, and searching the forums will show more information regarding why they occur, and possible treatments.

swim finds focusing intently on the sound of a running tap and imagining huge waterfalls helps a great deal. can't explain why and maybe that's for the best - the mind is a powerful thing and so is the placebo effect...

Re: Reducing harm done by opiates to a VERY important organ...
SWIM has found that the sound of water as well as the FEEL of water helps when she is having trouble urinating from too many pain pills. If SWIM closes her eyes and puts her hand under the running water from the sink while she is trying to go, the sound and feel of the water is usually quite effective. There have been times when SWIM was having a REALLY hard time of it and she would take a plastic cup and fill it with water. As SWIM was sitting on the toilet trying to urinate, she would slowly pour the water over her genitals and that worked well nearly every time! Of course, SWIM is a female, so she is uncertain if the same would work for a guy. SWIM supposes it couldn't hurt to try though!

swim says for some reason if someone else is outside the bathroom waiting, it seems like it takes a lot longer, even after the opioid induced urinary retention.

Re: Reducing harm done by opiates to a VERY important organ...
There is nothing quite like Metamucil; highly recommended for anyone suffering constipation from opioid use. It is a bulk producing laxative and fiber supplement that is used to treat constipation, hemorrhoids, diverticular disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. It even carries the ancillary benefit of reducing cholesterol when taken daily. Since virtually everyone can use more fiber in their diet, there is no reason anyone should be a stranger to this wonder supplement.
