USA - UF student arrested in Ecstasy bust

University of Florida Police arrested a college student for trafficking in Ecstasy pills Wednesday after finding the drug in his campus dorm room.

Peter George Davis, 18, a junior at the university who lives in Miami, was being held at the Alachua County jail Thursday on charges of possession with intent to sell, possession of alcohol by a person under 21 and drug trafficking, according to court records.

Officers located the drugs after getting a report about a drunken student in a dorm room, said UF Police Lt. Robert Wagner. After speaking with the student, police learned he had alcohol in his room at the Hume Hall dorm. Police searched the room and discovered about 153 grams of Ecstasy, which officers reported is equivalent to about 100 pills.

A $12,000 bond had been set for Davis’ release from jail.

Wagner said marijuana and Ecstasy are the most common types of illegal drugs found by officers in investigations handled by the campus Police Department.

Ecstasy is a stimulant and can produce feelings of euphoria as well as confusion and severe anxiety, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It can increase a person’s heart rate and blood pressure.

Ecstasy, also known as MDMA, is considered “the most readily available dangerous drug throughout Florida,” according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It generally is found in higher amounts in area with large populations of college students, the agency reported.
