Question can you fake narcolepsy?

Just wondering, probably a silly question but anyway.

SWIMs uncle has narcolepsy and is prescribed ritalin for it, you can hardly tell he has it though, he just falls asleep sometimes when your watching tv. (maybe thats cause of the ritalin though).

If not is there any other uppers or stimulants SWIM could somehow blag of the doctor?

Re: can you fake narcolepsy?

It'd probably be easier to fake ADHD than narcolepsy. They can actually do tests and monitor one's brainwaves to see if they have narcolepsy...it'd be hard to fake those... Or if swiy is on strong narcotic pain relievers, they could prescribe adderall or ritalin to combat the drowsiness. But swim would just try getting them for ADHD...

Re: can you fake narcolepsy?

In SWIM's experience with my psichiatrist (much <3)

He just told him what was going on in his life and then all of my research he had done on the subject. The doc had no problem assigning me an amphetamine and now benzodiazepine, purely because I dont come off clueless or immature. (I am actually seeking a bandage to a condition :/)

It really depends on the psych, and they will probably try to throw you a SSRI. Just act mature and tell him you have tried other methods to solve your concentration issues, but you just cant seem to focus at all. Its becoming a detriment in your work/school w/e. At this point, judge his attitude. If he trusts you then you can push an amphetamine. For me I also presented that "I had tried street methamphetamine and it was really manic and otherworldly, but I noticed that for the first time in my life it was so easy to understand myself and what was going on. I felt that I had better direction of my thoughts and I could concentrate to an elevated level, do you think a dexamphetamine at a low does would help me?"

Of course you would have to make it more eloquent, and in SWIM's previous psich was a complete idiot and would never resort to amphs. It all depends on the doc and how come across. I really doubt you will get it from a general doc these days, they have a new SNRI and shit which has been shown to help ADD. But just keep trying : find yourself a doctor who isnt a 'prescriptaphobiac' and come off educated and trying to solve a debtrimental problem in your life. Also, bring up Vyvanse : its a new prodrug amphetamine which will make you sound less like a drug seeker

Because you have ritalin it shoudl be no problem. Tell him your ritalin does have a minimal effect but still feels depressed (way less than your experience on methamphetamine) and you still fall asleep at random points. Sounds golden in SWIM's opinion.

Best of luck, amphetamines for the period I had really did improve my life but I still had some gaps I am trying to fill :/

Re: can you fake narcolepsy?

It's probably not a good idea to say you've done meth or to name of prescription drugs of any kind...most doctors like clueless. Otherwise you're a drug seeker. If they put you on an SNRI, just say it doesn't work, or you don't like the sexual side effects, or you want something that will work right away. Just don't act like you have a one drug goal in mind..

Re: can you fake narcolepsy?

Clueless allows the doc to throw whatever they want at you, which is going to be a SNRI. Then you go 'um well, I dont like SSRIs'. Yea, GG. Whatever you feel is best, I guess it has more to do with the psich. My Psich liked my knowledge and basically told me our last session I could try whatever doses and combos I wanted. You just dont want your doc to worry :/

Re: can you fake narcolepsy?

I think swiy is just unusually lucky. Either his psych doesn't care, wants money and repeated visits, does drugs himself, or is clueless. Most people here would not recommend being so straight up. That's a red flag to most doctors. It's not like it would take that many visits to get the medicine swiy wants by doing otherwise, if they don't just prescribe it in the first place. When it comes to ADHD, they'll try methylphenidate, amphetamines, and SNRI's. Just keep saying "didn't work" until you get a new one. If the doctor won't change, go to a different one. Or ask around and find some friends who get adderall, and ask where they go.

Re: can you fake narcolepsy?

Swim has been able to create a drug-induced narcolepsy, but it is very unsafe and Swim cannot recommend using drugs for this purpose.

Edit: Above post is spot on!

Because they have no potential for abuse, lil-nil side effects, and are effective, partially as a placebo. AND most psichs get a cut, SWIM believes, if they give out certain scripts. The guy who prescribed lexapro as the first option had posters and shit all over his office.

SRIS are really mild and are completely non addictive or dependant, aside from tolerance. AND overdose is hard to do + lil-nil black market value. Docs can get in trouble for that shit :/ too many pills found out to be sold or if someone ODs is alot of shit for them

Re: can you fake narcolepsy?

From what SWIM hears it's very VERY difficult to get any kind of stimulant on prescription in the UK (Where the poster is from I notice).
It seems to be as easy as pie in the US (you can get fucking meth on prescription ffs) and it's not too hard in OZ (Where Swim's from) provided you were diagnosed in your youth.

Good luck mate, an amphetamine prescription is a beautiful thing

Re: can you fake narcolepsy?

I really don't either...considering all of them have a warning on the bottle that says it might increase your risk of suicide. Swim took a trazodone pill once on accident, thinking it was tramadol(duhhhh they don't even look the same) and had some...well...unpleasant sexual side effects...look up retrograde ejaculation if you wish...

Other than that, he felt veryyyyyyy omfg tired and his vision got blurry and he wanted to throw up. Not fun. Antidepressants, SNRI's, and antipsychotics all have a wide array of side effects that can be pretty fucking bad. Personally, I'd rather be addicted to adderall any day over going through the side effects from SNRI's, SSRI's, and all that crap. And the only bad side effects from adderall for the most part are cardiovascular if one has a bad circulatory system or takes way too much. Stupid stupid stupid doctors.

Re: can you fake narcolepsy?

its pretty easy to fake add/ADHD since there isn't really much science involved with the diagnosis. theoretically all one would have to do would be see a psychologist and say "I think I have ADD, I can't seem to focus on work/school/other activities" this is usually all it takes along with a bit of understanding of what attention deficit disorder is to get the gold. i believe once some one is diagnosed with add they are considered diagnosed with it until proven otherwise, so maybe doc-hopping may be advisable if some one doesn't like the first doctors opinion

oh, and one would need to have insurance in order to walk into most psychologists

Lack of insurance is the only thing stopping swim. He can't use any drugs at all currently because he's trying to get a full time job and his girl would freak out on him...but if it's prescribed it's okay XD
