switching from opiates to long term methadone
Hi, I don't post much but swim has been taking lots of opiates long term. swim had unlimited easy access because he was a pharmacist. now that swim has decided its time to stop, he also found out about a terminal illness and wont/cant. but swim found a new doctor who really seems to care and suggested long term methadone treatment to get off all the other crap but still be able to fight against the pain from the illness. swim is willing to give a try but is not sure what the difference is. he knows chemically but is scared. the other opiates allowed swim to keep a quality of life that doctors say shouldn't have been possible but using could have also helped the disease progress faster. swim is thinking another year or two of using might not be that bad if he can have a few "normal" days and is wondering if anyone on longterm methadone treatment has any thoughts or advice.

Re: switching from opiates to long term methadone
First off, my heart goes out to SWIY. SWIY is in a shitty position, and I wish SWIY the strength to live the best you can for the rest of the time you have.
Methadone works for opioid dependence. If SWIY is on a proper dose, SWIY will not have physical cravings for dope, SWIY will get a nice nod a couple hours in after dosing, and SWIY will be able to live a life without having to get high every couple of hours. That's the quick answer. SWIY is in a situation that will probably call for additional pain management, which can be slightly more complicated while on methadone. Make sure SWIY talks to the doctors about how exactly that will work. And remember, advocate for SWIY's self. Speak up if SWIY is still in pain, if SWIY isn't comfortable, or any other issues arise. Good luck man, I wish the best for you. EDIT: One other thing. The analgesic effect of methadone wears off after 3-4 hours so keep that in mind. SWIY will need additional medication to help control the pain while on methadone. Last edited by y0ssarianlives; 14-10-2008 at 21:08. |

Re: switching from opiates to long term methadone
SWIM is a CP patient and was on meth for quite some time after initally being prescribed opies. Methadone works GREAT for PN. and will relieve all the W/D symptoms SWIY might be worried about.SWIM did however switch back to opies (Avinza,Opana,Oxy...etc)because he found that after being on a stable dose of meth his body would become used to it and his doc would have to increase his dose (which SWIM was concerned about when it came to methadone).SWIM now finds it easier to take his meds and if needed take any extra meds prescribed for break through PN.While on the methadone however SWIM found NO relief if he needed break through medication.Keep in mind that this is just 1 SWIMMERS story and Methadone does work wonders for pain.Good Luck,Best of health!!!
