Tripping on Tobacco

Hey guys I (think I can say that in this forum, right?) had an interesting experience a while ago and was curious if anyone had any idea what happened. I'll lay it down as best I can, memories a little hazy.

One of my friends had this big jug we used to throw our cigarettes in, we usually didn't bother to put them out so the smoke would gather in the jug. Over a couple years the jug finally filled up with cigarette butts. One day another friend broke it because he was in desperate need of a cigarette (long ass story, not a happy one either) and hoped to find at least half a cigarette. Well at the bottom of the jug there were 3 or 4 unsmoked cloves. These were a couple years old and had a slight brown discoloration on the paper. Well my friend started smoking one and instantly sat down. He said,"Holy fuck, these things are crazy!" Of course I had to try one. I was standing up, lit it and before I even inhaled I felt the effects. I had to sit down or fall down so I took a seat. My vision went crazy, mild hallucinations and everything was pink. I couldn't stop laughing either. A different friend said my eyes went instantly blood shot, like almost red.

Well, what the fuck happened? Haha, this has interested me since then.
I have a couple theories but I'm sure you guys could help me out. Maybe some of you have experienced the same thing. I think it could be a combination of years of smoke exposure and the fact it was left outside for 2 years in a jug. Like possible mold growth of something. What do you guys and girls think?
