No, it's a garden poppy. You need opium poppy (papaver somniferum) which grows on fields.

some companies use opium poppy seeds in food products, in fact if you eat too many you'll test positive for opiates in a UA.

So then, could these seeds for baking sold in shops papaver somniferum's? And if so, would they be still useable to grow a poppy?

Call around to flower stores, craft stores and see if anyone in your area sells poppy pods. Buy a few and either make tea w/ it or bust them open and use the seeds for your extract. you can also go to craft stores on the net and purchase them. |

Go to the McCormick Spice company website, & look up their info on the Poppy seeds they sell. They ARE the Opium Poppy. This is the Poppy used in baking & such. These are also the seeds I bought & have started growing. Look up pictures of the types of Poppy seeds in a google search, & you'll notice the Papaver somniferum seed is the one that you can buy in any grocery store. |

It's really a crap shoot whether the seeds at your local supermarket are opium poppy seeds or not. Some have had success with them, and some just make themselves sick trying. Also, when making poppy tea from seeds what your trying to get at is the reside which coats the outside of the seeds. The seeds are usually not cleaned very well if atall, and sometimes there is a minute amount of opium coating the outside of the seeds. There is no need to crush the seeds and extract what is inside, as the poppy plant does not start producing a significant amount of opium by mass until it has been growing for a while. I would take the advice given here, and just buy a bunch of seeds you KNOW are p. somnis. Or bette yet just buy the pods....much better. ~KT |

If opium is illegal, how does one get away with purchasing this stuff? I've also heard that the "California Poppy" can be substituted as Opium. Is this true? |

P.S. - No it cannot. While the California poppy was used by the Indians for some kind of a "sedating tea" it is not the same thing. I don't even think it's actually a poppy. There is no substitute for the good old Somni. To answer your other Q; the poppy is kind of a legal enigma. It's legal to possess the seeds nearly everywhere, it's legal to possess the whole plant most places, and it's legal to grow the plant most places. It is not legal to extract the alkaloids anywhere. ~KT |
