CFL light-bulb frozen ice pipe
Swim's had this great idea in his mind for a while but hasn't done it because it needs a bit more time to do (you'll understand as we go).
You'll need: -one of those twisty cfl lightbulbs. -a bit of hose -a bowl The idea is breaking off the glass part of the bulb so you'll end up with two open ends. One of them will be attached to the bowl and one to the hose, which will be your mouthpiece. Then you place this contraption inside a glass filled with water, so that only the bowl and the hose stick out of it, and then FREEZE IT. The result is a pipe that delivers really cold smoke. The reason swim hasn't done it is because he can't come up with a reasonable excuse for his mum if she finds this thing sitting in the freezer, so I'm throwing this out in case any of you want a good idea for a quick and cool (sort of) pipe. I can imagine busting this out in the middle of a party... it would be sweet. ps: I would suggest using a proper bowl, but if you can't find one, get a socket from a wrench. Swim has made bongs with these and they work great. tl;dr: ![]()

Re: CFL light-bulb frozen ice pipe
CFL's contain Mercury, SWIM would advise AGAINST using one for smoke to travel thru! Theres also a coating of Phosphor on the inside. Although the Mercury would probably leave once opened, but still some remains might be left behind. Something to think about.
SWIM thinks a improvement upon this idea would be to somehow use a flexible tubing to make a tunnel thru the ice, then remove the tubing leaving a nice icey tunnel for the smoke to travel thru. Would most likley melt soon upon smoking. They also make pipes with a liquid inside, so one could toss in the freezer for alittle bit and take out for a nice cool smoke. |

Re: CFL light-bulb frozen ice pipe
Of course! I forgot mentioning cleaning the tube, this is easily accomplished with water and some salt to act as a scrubbing agent, as you would clean a bong.

Re: CFL light-bulb frozen ice pipe
is it gonna spray like one of the tube ones or just drip out because O can deal with the dripping but if it sprays that might be a problem

Re: CFL light-bulb frozen ice pipe
Chances are mercury won't kill you, people used to play with it all the time because of how it moves around in little balls and stuff

Re: CFL light-bulb frozen ice pipe
why not just do the same thing but with some plastic tubing? one could use a glass stem like a glass chillum and put some of that aquarium tubing (no idea if this tubing is safe mind you) on the end and looped about in the ice. Those CFLs just seem like a hassle.
Great idea though! |

Re: CFL light-bulb frozen ice pipe
The amount of mercury in a CFL bulb is about 3-4 mg. The amount in an old thermometer is about 500 mg. I remember when my brother broke a mercury thermometer by accident and I played with the mercury, not knowing it was bad. My mom just made me wash my hands and I never died, nor felt poisoned. Although it's not healthy, It's an overstatement to say a CFL contains lethal quantities of mercury.
I think the design is a good idea, but a substitute for a CFL should be found. Can small aluminum tubing be found at hardware stores? I know you can get copper, but that'd be difficult to work with. Aluminum would be even better than glass because it transfers heat much quicker than glass, so it'd cool down the smoke even more. Also, you can get glass tubes that are used for building scientific apparatuses very cheap from chemistry suppliers. They come in straight tubes, but they're shape is very easy to manipulate when they're heated with an open flame, although I can't speak from personal experience if they're easy to work with or not. |

Re: CFL light-bulb frozen ice pipe
Really though, if you just took the bulb, cleaned the inside out completely, let it soak in alcohol or something, and let it all dry, wouldn't it just be a spiral glass tube in the end? It seems like it would be safe just for smoke to travel through if it was thoroughly cleaned.

Re: CFL light-bulb frozen ice pipe
playing with mercury with SWIY finger is completely different to inhaling it. To memory CFLs are under slight vacuum pressure so it will make a pop sound when broken.
Gs friend Crabcarp likes the idea of utilizing household items in interesting ways but, this one seems high in hassle for little reward. Once cleaned out Crabcarp see's no health risk to using the CFL tube, he likes the idea of the glass transferring heat alot more quickly than say rubber hose, but Crabcarp dislikes trying to join a bowl to one end of the broken tube, or having jagged edges of glass on his smoking device. The majority of people can afford a small bong and could just as easily fill this with crushed ice. Peace Geezaman |
