PHILADELPHIA - An Upland man has been sentenced to life behind bars for his part in the distribution of more than five kilograms of cocaine in Delaware County.
Tyrone S. Trader, of Main Street, was sentenced Monday to life in prison by U.S. District Judge Jan E. DuBois.
Trader, who has two prior drug trafficking convictions, is the first of nine defendants to be sentenced.
Trader sold cocaine in a Toby Farms neighborhood in Chester Township, directly across from an elementary school.
"One message of this drug trafficking case is that selling drugs in the area of an elementary school will not be tolerated," said Delaware County District Attorney G. Michael Green. "Those who engage in this behavior will be held accountable. Most importantly, drug traffickers will not be permitted (to) degrade our neighborhoods and terrorize our law- abiding citizens."
In 2005, a federal grand jury issued a 53-count indictment charging the nine defendants with conspiring to distribute between five and 15 kilograms of cocaine in Delaware County.
The indictment alleged that from July 2003 through October 2004, Tyrone Smith, of Burton Avenue, Sharon Hill, and William Green, of Youngs Avenue, Sharon Hill, supplied several men with cocaine that was then sold at various locations in the county, including Aston, Brookhaven, Chester and Ridley Township.
Also currently awaiting trial in federal court are: Louis Stillis of New Castle, Del.; Sherron Moore, of Main Street, Upland; Jamal Rideout, of Elson Road, Chester Township; Richard Robinson, of Powell Road, Chester Township; Larry Davis, of Woodworth Road, Brookhaven; and Kenneth Wilson of New Castle, Del.
The drug trafficking case was the result of an undercover investigation conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police and the DEA.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Katayoun Copeland, who is a deputy District Attorney in Delaware County, prosecuted the case.
