Question on tolerance

Hello everyone,

For the past 3 months my friends cat Zippy has been having difficulty sleeping as it hurt its back. The Vet advised that she gives the cat some paracetamol codeine tablets which they did.
After a while Zippy realised that the tables were quite enjoyable and she started to mix them in her bowl of water, later we noticed she had been tearing up coffee filters and making a right mess.

Anyway, yesterday we took Zippy to the Doctors and he prescribed some Co-codamol 30/500.

Zippy has been taking around 90mg – 120mg but the tables were only giving her a nice feeling for about 15-30 minutes then it would start to wear off. Do you think Zippy has been taking the tables for too long and she needs to be cut off for a while before she can get that nice feeling again that will help her sleep? Or do you think the cat needs a higher dose to get though the night?

Re: Question on tolerance

SWIM straight away thinks both, yes swiy does have a tolerance to opiates, so yes swiy will have to increase the amount to get similar experiences compared to when first started to take the tabs. Or alternatively swiy could get clean for a week or two then start again, however watch out for withdrawal, nasty..

Swiy should be ashamed of themselves allowing her pussy to enjoy recreational night time plesures is basicly feline cruelty.
Luckily zippy has only been taking relativly small doses of codeine and depending on the frequency of these doses will determin the level of withdrawl, codeine is a fairly weak opiate and at these doses the cat should be ok,if zippy does show signs of sickness reduce the dose over about 5 days this taper effect will remove most of the symptoms Eg:100mg>0mg.
Zippy can still enjoy her secret liasons but try and keep these to weekends, some really naughty cats have been known to steal up to 400mg of there masters stash, these are very naughty pussys and should be punished, repeatadly, with a big hard stick,whooo.....sorry got caught up in the moment, doses of this level should be built up to but if zippy keeps to weekend only use she should be able to enjoy doses around 100mg-250mg for some time..
p.s watch out for cat poo!codeine can cause constipation!!

Thank you both very much for the info, my friend has taken the medication away from Zippy and she will not be given it again until she hurts her back again which should be in a couple of weeks, the damn thing is like clockwork.

If you consume over 2grams of paracetamol at a time, doing a CWE is highly recommended.

Re: Question on tolerance

Keep in mind that codeine is not an active opiate itself. It must to metabolized into morphine, hydromorphone and a few other active opiates/opioids. Because of this there is a ceiling effect at ~400mg. After this any additional codeine ingested will be wasted, as it cannot be converted to it's active metabolites. This could lead to a more serious opiate dependence, which is no fun. Opiate withdrawl sucks, so avoid it if possible.

Re: Question on tolerance

Zippy has now been off the codeine for over 24hrs now and she looks fine, doesnt seem to be getting any withdrawals symptoms, in fact she is looking forward to hitting the gym tonight for a good workout.
Might Zippy not be getting any symptoms due to the low consumption of 130mg max over the period of 3 months 5 times per week?

Also when Zippy does need to start taking the medication again should she go with the usual dose of 130mg or start a little lower since it would have been a couple of weeks since her last time?

Re: Question on tolerance

prehaps, as swiy took it only 5 times a week, swiy could be lucky, swiy should wait 1 more day to ensure no withdrawal happens...

SWIM takes between 100mg - 200mg of Codeine to get the buzz, so the dose swiy says is about right for a newbie..

Lol if you keep asking for rep, chances are someone will leave you negative for asking. Just sayin'!

anywho, Ranke, can you provide a source for
codeine ---> morphine/hydromorphone in the body? I have honestly never heard this elsewhere. I was under the impression codeine was active on it's own. I'd love to just know if I'm wrong.

Everbody apart from one or two knows that a percentage of codeine turns into morphine when broken down by the body

Here you go.
http://www.intox.org/databank/docume...4%20Metabolism

It turns out it is active but it has a very weak affinity for opioid receptors. So for all practical purposes it is inactive. Swim was not able to find a study that showed codeine was metabolized into hydromorphone but he does recall seeing a break down of the metabolites once that included hydromorphone. Swim will keep an eye out for it and post it if he finds it.

Thank you.

I also found some info on my own that verified a very small amount becomes morphine and hydromorphone.

Re: Question on tolerance

Jeesh, the cat is jumping around like crazy, she cant wait for the weekend its her first time being off codeine in 3 months and she is hoping that 3.5 day break will do the trick on reducing the tolerance.

reco1977 added 1108 Minutes and 12 Seconds later...

Well, its been 3 days now and Zippy doesnt have any withdrawal symptoms at all. Do you think Zippy will have a better effect than before because of the 3 day break?

Re: Question on tolerance

Congratulations to swiy for abstaining for 3.5 days! zippy as been very lucky not to endure any ill effects from there recent opiate binge,Please do not take this to be the norm opiates can be very addictive.
Swiys tolerance will have dropped a little in this time but i would doubt doses less than 100mg would enduce any euporic effects, check out opiate dosage chart for full details,This can be found in the main opiates and opoids section....

Re: Question on tolerance

Zippy gave it a bash a few hours ago and noticed a slight increase in effect since the last time but not nearly as good as it used to be. zippy is going to give it a break for a week or so to see if this helps a little more

Re: Question on tolerance

Zippy gave it nearly a week and then tried her codeine again. She did notice that she was feeling a lot more relaxed than the last time she tried it but no nice euphoric feelings. Do you think her tolerance might still be pretty high and she should take even more time off, maybe a month?
She just wants to get back to that point when she first tried it a few months ago, nothing was a hassle for her, she just went with the flow and enjoyed the fuzzy feelings inside.

Re: Question on tolerance

swim is a daily abuser of codeine (CWE used naturally) but is trying so hard to have at least a few days off so, as to enjoy the full effects of codeine. problem is, swim suffers badly with anxiety and finds it very difficult to go without it, even for one day, as codeine is a very effective method of curing anxiety. swim advises other codeine users to be careful, as addiction is no fun, tolerance and addiction develops quickly, have fun but be safe

Whoah...personal question, I know, but how does SWIY cope with the constipation? SWIM tends to find codeine bungs him up quite badly for a day or two from a single dose, and he never takes the stuff more regularly than once a week. Or does the constipation decrease as one's tolerance builds up?

Re: Question on tolerance

although swim used to get bunged up, she doesn`t anymore, swim does eat a high fibre diet which probably helps.
swim used to use epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) available in any chemist to deal with constipation but be warned if swiy trys it, it tastes foul and is VERY effective.

SWIM has been doing 350mg of di-hydrocodeine five days a week for the past 7 weeks. SWIM has never suffered from constipation. SWIM loves to eat carrots, apples, and muesli, so maybe all that fiber has kept SWIM's bowels nice and loose.

due to swims increasing use of codeine 400mg + dailey, swim now suffers from constipation, eating crap doesn`t help. swim needs to cut down but finds it very difficult due to anxiety problem.

Swim has the same problem. He can't cut down because of his anxety problem but has no problem with the constipation.A regular OTC laxative always solves the problem...
