hi guys.
this is a very common smoking device in my country. our teenagers uses this device to smoke tobbaco and some of them smoke hashish with this. here are some pictures of it. damn I cant write the internet adresses. no problem search قلیان on google imagas

man I tell you this is fantastic.
the smoke is cooled by water so you can full the hole capacity of your lungs with smoke withouat have ANY problems and you can easily hold it for 30 seconds.
and can some one tel me what is it's name in english? we cal it GHELYUN or قلیون

hi. outside Iran such waterpipes are called "sheesha" in Maghreb ( esp Tunisian) arabic and in the Gulf, which is said to be derived from "hashish", but the most word common by far is "narguileh" in middle eastern + egyptian arabic dialects, "narjeelah" in classical arabic نرجيلة , a word which comes from, you guessed it, Persian...

They're also called hookah ( north indian word), especially in anglo-saxon litterature probably due to the UK's colonial past ( in "Alice in Wonderland" for instance), or something horrible such as "hubbly bubbly" for tourists, as in Turkey...

there's two main designs, one in which the head ( bowl) is female and is plugged in to the body, which is found in Tunisia, Egypt, Turkey and in the picture posted.
in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine etc the head is male and goes into a female tube. there's also two types of heads, one flat, for making a plain tobacco cone, and a bowl shaped one like in these picture, which is more often used for fruit flavoured tobacco molasse, which are often covered with pierced tin foil so that the ash is not in direct contact but kind of vapourizes to molasse. the techniques for adding a little cannabis to such devices vary, but it's fundamentaly a tobacco smoking device
how is it in Iran ?
