Hiccups and Diazepam
Swim took 5 5mg diazepam (Valium) about an hour ago. Swim doesn't use diazepam often (only when there is no opiates to be found). For some reason, every time Swim takes the valium (or the opiates for that matter) she gets the hiccups. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know why this may be happening
Also, would it be a bad idea to take 4 more of the diazepam now? Swim is guessing that the valium feel good doesn't hang around for very long for her. And swim didn't have any bad side effects, not even sleepy. Of course, swim is a fairly big boned person. Also, swim has to say every time she has taken valiums before they just made her tired. Swim had a very positive reaction this time. Would the reaction be different if taken on an empty stomach rather than taken on a full stomach. Swim knows that with opiates, she has better luck if her stomach is completely empty. Swim is not trying to talk so much about the opiates, but she misses them if you can't tell

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
Hiccups are a not so common side effect of benzos, but they happen. While swim has never had this effect from diazepam, he gets the hiccups from clonazepam from time to time. In regards to dosage, swiy shouldn't take more than 10mg of diazepam during a single dose. Diazepam has a pretty fast peak (usually around an hour). Give an hour between doses. In regards to taking the pills on an empty stomach, swim understands that opiates will come on much stronger, but not so much with diazepam. It will generally peak at the same time with or without an empty stomach.

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
Hiccups can occur from benzo consumption.
It can happen much more when combining benzos with alcohol, so refrain from combining the two, as it is unsafe for anyone but those very experienced. |

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
Ha ha SWIM has noticed this lately. SWIM only clicked it was the diazepam after it happened a couple of times. Weird int it!? and annoying too. SWIM would also love to know the reason and is glad she's not the only one.
SWIM was not consuming any alcohol at the time. SWIM has a cup of tea with her diazepam to help them melt in her tummy

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
Benzodiazepines are well recognised as a cause of hiccups! Unfortunately no-one seems to know why.
There's an interesting thing in the archive here... http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/loc...tid=16&id=1926 on drug induced hiccups and the treatement of |

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
Swim does wish to state that the only time he or others had hiccups around him, large amounts of benzos, assorted downer combos, or benzo + alcohol were involved. As in, more dangerous doses.
Hiccups can be a warning sign. Swim's exgirlfriend's brother was hiccuping for a good 14 hours after an alprazolam/hard liquor binge that could have been easily fatal for him, but he had no idea it was dangerous to mix them at all. He was consuming perhaps 4-8mg alprazolam with very little tolerance + lots of beer and vodka rather often and wondering why he got hiccups. That and the massive loss of memory. |

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
Well, with in SWIMs experience, there wasn't any alcohol involved. She's a little bit too much of a chicken to experiment with mixing. So maybe swim took too high of a dose??

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
Well, high dose usuage generally includes blackouts, severe intoxication, amnesia etc. So unless you were seriously messed up on them, it probably was not high dose usage.

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
Swim has personally encountered hiccups before from multiple CNS sedating drugs, like OP said, not limited to benzos.
Are hiccups some side effect of CNS sedation or an altogether separate, unique side effect? Anyone care to at least speculate? |

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
Hiccups are a result of CNS depression.

Re: Hiccups and Diazepam
^^^ Not so simple. It's a complex reflex arc, and, because I think it's interesting, here it is:
Afferent limb - Phrenic and vagus nerves and sympathetic chain arising from T6-12 Hiccup center - Nonspecific location between C3 and C5 Connections to the respiratory center, phrenic nerve nuclei, medullary reticular formation, and hypothalamus Efferents Phrenic nerve (C3-5) Anterior scalene muscles (C5-7) External intercostals (T1-11) Glottis (recurrent laryngeal component of vagus) Inhibitory autonomic processes Decreasing esophageal contraction tone Lower esophageal sphincter tone God, I love emedicine (apart from the American spelling!) |
