Re: Best genre of music on MDMA or similar drugs!

A dissenter in the ranks. SWIM doesn't generally like most electronic music, can't even claim to know what "hippy handcore" or "junglefluff" or "bizzonk" are ... ... but he has discovered that what he likes best on molly is music without words, energetic but not too drummy. Minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Terry Riley are excellent (try to find the Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble's version of Reich's "Music of 18 Musicians" which is 60 minutes of bliss when one is peaking). Other modern classical that's not too dissonant can also be great, such as some of Kronos Quartet's less dark moments ("Pieces of Africa" is good), or especially John Tavener's "The Protecting Veil", which is profound and stimulating.

yep gotto go happy hardcore on this one tho taste does vary from time to time, old mixes from the likes of sasha, kenny ken early 90's era and reel 2 reel label bring back fond memories. recently been listening to the erotic lounge series, which are just about right for a chilled night in.

Re: Best genre of music on MDMA or similar drugs

while cooking SWIM loves to listen to trance, dance and rave. he likes this
when he isnt cooking but even more so when he is.

the best experience SWIM has had while cooking was when he was in magaluf
in july 2008. he had a few narcotics and went to BCM for a Tiesto set. this
was one of the best nights of SWIMs life. the music, the lights, the sexy
dancers, all the lads together. UNREAL!!! oh the memories!

I'm afraid happy hardcore is associated with non-educated street delinquents and buckfast drinkers where I come from. So is a some of the more well-known psytrance unfortunatly.

Doesn't stop me loving psytrance though.

SWIM would indeed give his/her vote to psychedelic trance. The atmosphere, the decorations and all that alltogether at those parties is incomparable with the parties of other styles.

Re: Best genre of music on MDMA or similar drugs

Swim used to love the early DJ Sasha Italian Vocal House with the odd bit of Techno thrown in for good messure, the Friday nights at the Hacienda in 1990-91 (Sasha Residency) were fantastic. Swim did have a couple of good nights at Renaissance when Sasha and Digweed were doing their thing around summer '93.

After Sasha left the Saturdays at the Hacienda with Greame Park were good too, but, not quite as good as the earlier days.

Re: Best genre of music on MDMA or similar drugs

Trance music without a doubt, but not Ibiza trance or the garbage played now a days. Look for good trance from the early-late 90s. But I'm talking pure mdma here. If I'm not doing pure mdma I usually end up just wanting something with a hard bass to dance off the shit pill. With pure mdma I don't even bother dancing much, the fun is in socializing and getting lost in the feel of the music (which should be a nice soothing, flowing feeling). Same thing goes for LSD to, you want to get lost in the music and trance (good trance) happens to be designed specifically for that. If you're listening to trance properly you shouldn't be focusing so much on what it sounds like as much as how it is making you feel. Open up your feelings to the music and let the music guide your emotions, the same way on LSD how your mind gets lost to the music, on mdma your emotions should get lost to the music and good old classic trance can't be beat in that department.

My raver friend goes back and forth to what is better to roll to: Psytrance or happy hardcore. Usually it's whichever he rolled to most recently. He told me to vote for happy hardcore.

Just something to dance to (sober), electro is the best. Check out the AC Slater to get an idea what I'm referring to.

SWIM finds that when on molly the cheese and tackiness is the best part. The tackier the better! Take this song for example, field of dreams by flip and fill. Listen to it when sober and you'll likely roll your eyes and think its amazingly tacky and predictable, but listen to it on MD and it takes on a whole new meaning. Really happy and upbeat, just makes you want to sing along, dance, smile and be happy. SWIM finds it awesome on MD.

Its down to the chords used. In this case its the classic, A minor, F major, C major, G major chord progression, which is such a happy powerful progression. Its used in many, many songs that have a similar feeling to it, shooting star by Bang, fly on the wings of love by chasis, your my angel by (i think) scott brown, and many, many more good tunes ("save tonight" by eagle eye cherry is another classic based solely on this progression). If a song uses this chord progression, and you like other ones based on this, your bound to like all of them. Same goes with many other powerful chord progressions, but I wont bore people here with all the individual chords. My piano playing always makes me notice the chord sequences used in songs and how they effect people, a very interesting area to look into if you've got a musical ear.

Synesthesiac added 73 Minutes and 43 Seconds later...

And I'm currently working on a remix of that song "field of dreams". Just set all my music production stuff up and this is going to be the first song I remix. stay tuned and I'll upload it in a week or so.... I'll try to make it a good version for rolling to....

Each to his own. I find just find it such happy music that I cant resist smiliing and being happy when listening to it. Try it on your next roll, you may be surprised. I can totally agree with you on the D+B front though, drum and bass on MDMA is awesome. Especially drum and bass with definate chord progessions and with a proper tune to it, just a repetitive heavy beat by itself can get a bit boring, it always needs a good tune to accompany it. Then the heavier the beat the better.

Re: Best genre of music on MDMA or similar drugs!

You have to really be into your hardcore to appreciate it. The majority of mainstream stuff is just commercial tat, it's the underground lesser known tunes which are really banging. You wouldn't hear/know of these unless you know someone who is really in to it or have enough interest to explore the genre yourself.

I just don't find any other genre as euphoric and energetic as happyhardcore. There are also many sub genres such as freeform, trancecore (which improves many trance songs), uk hardcore, gabber, the list goes on...

I guess that explains why most happyhardcore fans tend to be quite dedicated to the genre.

Defo psytrance like hallucinogen, infected mushroom, eat static etc., or psydance(?) like the orb, orbital, and stuff, and/or Dub like ott, asian dub foundation, scratch perry, etc., or prog psych like ozrics, gong, hillage, etc.
Shit, dont know really!?
It kind of depends on the setting and compound.

For SWIM, there is no specific style of music. Sound and arrangement are the key.
The relation between mdma and a particular style of music (like trance, house, d&b, ...) is a cliché.

I disagree. There is some relation between specific genres of music and MDMA or similar drugs. Some music styles just 'fit' better with stimulant drug use. The media does blow the whole thing out of proportion, but there is some degree of truth behind the idea. My little fishy knows this because he has experienced it and met many people who have also.

There was also a study done which links certain types of music to a certain type of personality. One of the common personality traits in many forms of quite hard and fast music was curiosity and/or risk taking. There you have a possible link to why some genres/drugs fit well. This is obviously not strictly true for everyone but maybe a majority.

Different experience for SWIM and friends.
Best time was spend listen to a wide genre of music: electro, d&b, rock, psychedelic, classic, ambient, trip hop, disco, ...
