N.Y. border guards seize 34 kilograms of ecstasy from Canadian

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Border guards in Buffalo say they seized the equivalent of about 34 kilograms of the club-drug ecstasy from a Canadian who tried to smuggle it into the country.

Fifty-seven-year old Leonard Beasley of Downsview, Ont., faces federal drug charges after his arrest Saturday. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents say they became suspicious of Beasley, who told them he was going to a hospital for an exam.

They say a search of his car turned up 22 vacuum-sealed bags with more than 111,000 ecstasy pills hidden in a spare tire and under the back seat.

Helen Sterling, the agency's assistant director of field operations in Buffalo, says the drugs have a street value of roughly US$2.2 million.

Beasley is in the Erie County Jail, and officials don't know if he has a lawyer.

Holy shit! That's a lot of ecstasy to hide in your car.Wh did they search the guy's trunk anyways? I though they weren't allowed to do that.

AFAIK, border guards have full power to search a person and vehicle, without reason or warrant. People trying to cross the border don't have the same protections as someone in the country.
