Purity - Codeine CWE - brown powder

SWIM has used cold water extraction a number of times before with various results, but decided to make sure how much pure codeine swim was actually getting in the filtered result by deciding to evaporate the water.

Swim had made an extraction a long time ago and the resulting liquid was kept for a long time in a plastic cola bottle. swim had used 20 packs of co-codamol (20 pills in a pack, 8mg codeine per pill) but over the period the liquid was stored, the liquid had turned brown. what could have caused this?
the bottle of liquid was stored mostly in a dark place and the liquid was as clear as water right after the extraction.

The evaporation process took nearly 2-3 weeks, during which time the liquid turned into very dark brown and finally swim was left with very dark, nearly black crystalized powder. The question is, why did the liquid and the resulting powder turn brown over the period of time it was stored in a bottle?

The weight of the resulting powder (about 2 grams) seems to go along with the amount of pills used.

SWIM did try to heat the liquid (for a short time) at some point, to speed up the evaporation. Swim has read that heat can destroy codeine - according to this hypothesis, is the destoyed codeine worthless (the amount of the powder should have decreased) or will it be in the final product but with lower purity?

From what SWIM knows the brown colour is from corn starch or caffeine that also makes it through filtration- usual and perfectally safe, wont effect the codiene.

Also leaving codiene in water too long can affect and damage the molecules which in turn may affect the strength.

True heat does damege codiene but it depends how much heat and the length of time, SWIY have to evaluate..

SWIM cant see the product being dangerous so SWIY should maybe try ingesting some of the codiene to see what effects are brought on by it- best way to evaluate strength. 250 mgs per hit is a moderate amount to start.

Discolouration could be due to a number of things (did SWIY clean the coke bottle properly??).

Decomposition might play a part, I don't know. Heating the liquid properly didn't hurt things, but it really is best to leave things evaporate naturally. It's really just my personal opinion, but naturally is usually the best.

Swim has the same problem! He did a regular CWE on 10 500/30/8 pills (just to test the method) and ended up with a liquid as clear as water.
He then added Sodium bicarbonate to rise the PH therefore producing freebase codeine, which would precipitate out of the solution.

Then, he filtered the solution overnight using No. 5 lab filters (finest filters, used for fine cristalline) and in the morning he has a brown powder trapped in the filter and brown filtered water in the cup...

Swim is working on this problem at the moment,swi-q did normal CWE and the resulting clear liquid was bottled for storage (2 weeks) the bottle was exposed to some sunlight(Fast Forward 2 Weeks)The liquid had a slight brown tinge to it and a strange smell.Swim put the liquid in a glass and put it in the freezer,the frozen block was pretty interesting it contained very long ice crystals(caffine?binders?apap?)
Also this brown colour remained as did the smell and there was a scum like froth on the top of the ice lump??
Swim is working on some experiments in "The Lab" and he is also trying to obtain factual answers to many of the CWE questions via teaching estabolishments???will post any and all replies "IF" any come back?

Robo's just trying to get caffeine free codeine...Here's the method he uses:

ROBO'S REFINED CWE
You'll need:
-water(preferably bottled)
-a baker or other container capable of measuring ml.
-a funnel
-tissue paper or as SWIJulian suggested woman's stocking
-coffee filters or preferably lab filters
Okay so here's the procedure:
1-Heat the water to about 30C, just above room temp.Pur the desired amount of water in the baker or glass (swim uses 100ml for 20 tablets, also works well for up to 30 tablets)
2-Add the uncrushed tablets to the water and wait for about 10 minutes.You could also crush the tablets beforehand but swim never needs to.
3-While you wait for the tablets to dissolve wet the paper tissue or whatever you're using and place in the funnel.
4-All the tablets should be dissolved by now, check for chunks in the bottom of the glass.
Place the funnel on top of a tall glass and filter the mix through it.
After it's done pur a tiny little bit of water in the baker with the residue ad pur it on the filter, this will ensure that you get all the codeine out.
5-Discard the tissue paper and wash the funnel and the baker.Now pur the filtered solution into the baker and look at how many ml of water are left.
This will give you an aproximate idea on your yield.
6-Put the baker in the freezer, and wait until you see a little bit of ice on top.
7-While you wait for the solution to cool, place the lab or coffee filters in the funnel making sure they're wet before filtering.
8-Filter the solution through the coffee/lab filter.If it takes too long you might wanna filter inside the fridge so that it stays cool.
9-The filtered solution should be as clear as water,Drink and enjoy.You might wanna wait until you have an empty stomach as this greatly potentiates the codeine.
Swim thinks the best chaser is Diet 7up but that's just him.
