Combinations - Clonazepam and Diazepam

Over the past two years I’ve done my rounds having been prescribed all the major benzodiazepines for panic disorder accompanied by general anxiety. Recently I switched from Valium 15mg 3x daily to Klonopin 0.5mg 2x daily. Sometimes I have breakthrough anxiety / panic attacks and was wondering if it would be safe to take a 5mg Valium while on my full dose of 1mg Klonopin if I’m having an attack, rather than take an extra Klonopin (I have over 40 5mg Valium pills laying around). Has anyone had good or bad experiences with combining these two meds for breakthrough anxiety? Could this be a fatal interaction? Pls. advise.

Just to clarify, panic82 is swim, and swim was prescribed 5mg Valium 3x daily, not 15mg Valium 3x daily. Sorry for the confusion.

If you want to combine them for medicinal use, Swim personally would say not to. Starting to do more dangerous/stronger drugs or drug combos for anything but abuse seems to lead to abuse/addiction.

Play it safe, and talk to a doctor about getting different treatment. If you want to know for recreational use, be careful, play it safe, and start with low doses.

Swim has been told by a NP that patients on long term maintenance benzodiazepine therapy such as Klonopin or Valium may be given Xanax for breakthrough anxiety. Swim wonders if that’s safe simply because Xanax is a pure sedative / anxiolytic med and therefore wouldn’t interact with the muscle relaxant effects of other classical benzos such as Ativan, Klonopin, or Valium. Obviously over-CNS depression is swim’s biggest concern. However, swim doesn’t understand how a Xanax / Klonopin combo could be safer than a Valium / Klonopin combo if not just for fear of over relaxing the muscles, in particular cardiac muscles. Has anyone ever have a combination of two “classical” benzos, i.e. Ativan, Valium, or Klonopin, recreationally or medicinally?

Swim has had various combos of alprazolam (Xanax), Lorazepam aka Ativan, and Clonazepam aka Klonopin, all at lower doses.

Physical sedation is still a risk with anything benzo-like. Swim hears about people dying from various combos with alprazolam all the time. Be careful with that one, it is stronger than most and the scripts for it can get to be overkill.


Also, if there is one thing Swim has learned in the drug world: most doctors and ESPECIALLY lower medical workers (nurses, NP's, etc) are absolutely ignorant about recreational drugs, be it opioids, benzos, or amphetamines. Generally speaking, they tend to be clueless about dangers/addiction/etc. At least the ones Swim has met in the real world.


Over CNS depression is a risk with higher amounts and ESP combos of anything that is similar. As long as you have a doctor guiding you, you should be safe. They tend to know whats best for medicinal purposes, dose wise. No one here could adequately tell you a proper dosage.

As long as you don't eat huge amounts of CNS depressing drugs, you should be fine. Avoid overkill.

Mixing is not a good idea unless your (Doctor) suggest. Both these drugs have long half lifes. Swim would say no.
