Problem with Diazepam - takes too long to become active

Can anyone advise SWIM.

SWIM always wakes up with the tremors, but has to drive & usually perform some tasks, which SWIM finds impossible whilst shaking.

Writing is difficult, using computer, Driving as mentioned - most things really.

SWIM is currently withdrawn and manages most days on 2 mg Diazepan, several glasses of wine in the evening and frequently some skunk.

SWIM has to be driving at 8:30 am, and currently finds that he needs to meds at approx 6:00 am for them to be effective.

Please is there a way to speed up their effectiveness ?

Any replies appreciated

Speed up the effectiveness?

If you're withdrawing and shaking so badly you need to take benzos then you REALLY shouldn't be behind the wheel.

Re: Problem with Diazepan - takes too long to become active

I think the OP means withdrawn as in introverted rather than in withdrawal.

Has your collie spoken to his vet about propranolol? Although a beta blocker used primarily for high blood pressure in it's modified release form it is a very effective anti-anxiolytic which will help with that tremor also.

An alternative benzo might also be looked at - lorazepam seems to have a quicker action than diazepam.

Best advice would be another trip to the vet mate! And maybe cutting down on the skunk might be advised also? A Certain Mouse found his anxiety levels dropped massively when he gave up the sticky bud.

Best of luck!

Understand where you are coming from, but honestly once SWIM feels OK, is much better than a lot of drivers on the road.

Ignorant White Van Men, foriegn lorry drivers, little old ladies taking tons of meds, young speed freaks, very important people who have to go fast because they have a BMW or a JAG and have important business meeting to attend (U must observe these)

Been driving 35 years, 1 minor prang, 2 speeding tickets in all this time.

Just seriously wondered if any one had any suggestions to stop me having to get up at 5AM every morning.

Substances that acidify the urine generally speed up ingestion of benzos. Swiy could try taking your meds with a beverage high in Vitamin C or citric acid content.

Re: Problem with Diazepan - takes too long to become active

If you are partial to the effects of diazepam, in particular, try temazepam. It is the major (active) metabolite of diazepam, and largely responsible for the prototype drug's central effects. Otherwise, there are other benzodiazepines, which, (because of their pharmacological properties and(or) mode of administration, (ie sublingually)), take effect quicker. But if you like diazepam's fine effets and you just want faster onset, temaepam is the way to go (since it is diazepam's major active metabolite).

Thinks SWIM better go back to the VETS, but thanks for the help and input.

Useless. The only way to shorten the time to onset is to change the taking.

- use drops
- use another benzo with quicker onset
- use injectable vials
- snort it (only with midazolam)

SWIM isnt 100% sure but thinks that when driving under influence of benzos, your insurance will not pay in case of any accident. Drivers licencse will be taken, too. -> SWIM knows this depends on country

Only take 4mg of Diazepan, does not make SWIM drowsy, doctor told SWIM not to worry about driving.

In the UK , u can even have a certain amount of booze and drive.

But think u have a good point, most Insurance companies will wriggle out of anything.
