Tasmanian morphine free poppy's - true or false?
So my friend jenny has poppy's growing in her backyard, and she happens to live in Australia she informed me that these were grown from seeds from the supermarket. And after doing some goggleing, found that they are indeed tazzie purples, she told me the pods are swelling up nice and should be ready for harvesting soon but she is unsure if it is safe to consume these poppy's due to reports of the high thebaine content that tazzies have been reported to have.
So it begs the question is it true that they have GM'd this strain to contain high amounts of this undesirable substance or not? If so is it possible to breed it out over several generations? |

Re: Tasmanian morphine free poppy's - true or false?
"Tazzie's" as I've understood are morphine high poppies. There are morphine free poppies, and they are called "Norman's". They do grow in Tasmania too, but from what I understand are opposite of "Tazzie's". It is very easy to determine if what they are by bleeding them. If they bleed white they have morphine. If they bleed orange they are the Norman's.

Re: Tasmanian morphine free poppy's - true or false?
Generally speaking, Tasmanian strain poppies are said to have a high morphine content. The pharmaceutical companies that grow poppies on Tasmania have developed a high Thebaine strain, but SWIM thinks these seeds are NOT being used in the flavoring/spice industry. SWIM thinks poppies grown from grocery store spice isles should be safe and should NOT be the High Thebaine strain. SWIM grew poppies from a jar of McKormic brand poppy seeds. The flowers were purple with white borders and provided a pleasant opiate high.
SWIM is interested though and he will look into this matter further. |

Yeah, a high thebaine variety would be pretty dangerous to eat too.

Yea that's jenny's main concern, thebaine poisoning. She said she pin pricked one of the pods and a crap load of while latex came spewing out just from this one pin prick, so they arnt short on latex.
What are the symptoms of thebaine? |

Although this may be true, the color of the latex would not be the best indicator.SWIM has seen pods bleed pinkish to orangish and have produced good quality.
