Safety of Acetone-DMSO Salvia Tincture
Jonathan Ott wrote that he experimented with an Acetone-DMSO Salvia Tincture. He said that it is very potent, he wrote: The probable descending order of potency is as follows: sublingual salvinorin A ≥ vaporized salvinorin A ≥ chewed leaf, quid ≥ chewed leaf, swallowed ≥ infusions of leaf
(This is from Ott's article Ethnopharmacognosy and Human Pharmacology of Salvia divinorum and Salvinorin A. It's on the Sagewisdom site. I can't post it since I can't yet post links.) How safe would it be to take an Acetone or Acetone-DMSO tincture sublingually? SWIM was thinking about an Acetone-Salvia tincture (without the DMSO). A ml of Acetone can hold 20 mg of Salvinorin. A dose of 1mg of Salvinorin would be 1/20 ml of the Acetone-Salvia tincture. Since 1 ml is 15-20 drops, one dose of 1 mg Salvinorin would be about one drop of that tincture. How safe is it to take small quantities of Acetone sublingually? From what I've read, it's not that dangerous, but I'm still wondering. Has anybody else tried Jonathan Ott's method of taking Acetone-DMSO tincture? About the tincture, Ott wrote: At 1 % strength in acetone, however, 100 mcg of salvinorin A can be delivered in 10 mcl (10 λ) of acetone, which provokes only slight irritation and is readily absorbed before salivation can interfere—the first effects are typically felt within 90 seconds, and reach a maximum within 10-15 minutes. Although I made 1 % test solutions in acetone (10 mg/1.0 ml), concentrations as high as 10% might be possible (100 mg/1.0 ml), further minimizing the amount of solvent involved (in the latter case, 1.0 mg of salvinorin A could be delivered in 10 mcl of solution). Salvinorin A is sufficiently soluble in the aprotic solvent dimethyl-sulfoxide or DMSO, to prepare 1 % solutions, and this solvent was also found to be an effective means of sublingual delivery of salvinorin A. |

Re: Safety of Acetone-DMSO Salvia Tincture
There is probably more acetone in a can of cheap beer than one drop - but still - SWIM is drinking acetone! Acetone! Ewwwwwww! Sounds like something out of Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut...
From a toxicological standpoint - it won't harm SWIM. From a social perspective - SWIM drinks acetone! Bongo has done worse. He delighted in taking an empty container of Windex (American product containing ammonia - dyed blue - for washing windows), cleaning it thoroughly, adding water and blue food-coloring. And walking about town squirting the fake Windex in his mouth to startled glares from the local rubes. Acetone?? Acetone! |

Lol SWIM really wants to try this now.
If it isn't going to be too dangerous anyway. Sounds like it might be a way to hold onto salvia-space for a bit longer and really get more out of the experience. |
