The book is part autobiography, part poetry and part philosophy. It starts with Alpert's (aka Ram Dass) journey from leading harvard professor, expert game player, to psychedelic searcher, to religious learner in India, and finally to spiritual guru himself. The middle section of the book is like a long philosophical poem with some nice art. The final section of the book mostly gives spiritual advice and contains a lot of great quotes from a variety of spiritual and philosophical traditions.
Personally I found the autobiography most appealing, with its trip reports and the doctor's insights into life in general and his own. The middle section was good. I skipped through a lot of the last section because the subjects or spiritual techniques simply didn't appeal to me, but the quotes were interesting.
Overall, I'd give this book a 7/10 and say it is a good book. Perhaps if the reader is keen on taking a spiritual journey and wants to try some of the many techniques in the last part of this book, they would find this book more appealing.
