Body muscular pains when drinking spirits?

used the search engine & found nothing related to this.

was wondering if any one has any ideas as to why i get what feels like muscular pains when drinking alcohol such as spirits. mainly rum & vodka have given me the most pains, the pains are mostly my upper back. it's feels like muscle spasms & it becomes very sore & uncomfortable, swinging my arms seems to work a little, but it's hard to tell. i know of the usual pains the next day in your legs, which i know is common but this is from the start of the drinking session.

am i allergic to spirits? perhaps just tension from stress although i feel rather chill?

Well it is possible to initiate a visceral somatic reflex if an organ is irritated or inflamed. Like the stomach, GI tract, pancreas or what ever. Irritation or inflammation of the organ can cause the paraspinal muscles ot contract and cause imbalance and pain. Irritation or inflammation of the pancreas may refer pain to the back. But the referred pain from an inflamed pancreas is not the same as a visceral-somatic reflex from an organ. So yeah...There are things that can do it. Alcohol can irritate the GI tract for example and that could cause contraction of back muscles in the thoracic spine which could produce pain. Or referral from a retro structure like the pancreas could cause pain in the back.

Maybe the liquor is irritating the esophagus provoking a visceral-somatic reflex which is procucing thoracic paraspinal tightness and resuttant pain in the back. If this was the case you would likely have heartburn or similar distress as well but not absolutely.

Re: body muscular pains when drinking spirits?

thank you for your detailed possible explanations lobsang. the esophagus irritation seems to be the most likely sign because i did'nt mention that this has happened a few times before. after the smurf has had a binge of cocaine & alot of alcohol 'rum' a really scarey thing happens to the 'little tounge thing' that hangs down at the back of the throat. it swells up alot & smurf battles to speak because it flaps forward on to his tounge. have you heard of this or seen it before? it takes about 8 hours to become normal again.

thanx again.

Well if the uvula is swelling up like that it is not a good situation. It could be localized irritation or it could be a reaction which is to the drug generally. This reaction could make you not be able to breath if it happened badly. I really do not know what to say but to say not to do what SWIy is doing. Because not beaing able to breath is not a good thing.

Wow. I learned a new thing or two. I would have suggested something probably too obvious, namely dehydration.

Re: body muscular pains when drinking spirits?

yes it is one of the main reasons smurf stopped with the cocaine habits & lifestyle. the breathing problems became really bad & having permanent medication to try help also an operation on the nose for collapsing cartlidge & pollocks etc eventually just all proved worthless. smurf has'nt got much of a choice because not being able to breathe is a terrible thing & causes irritable sleepless nights. life's better with being able to taste your food properly & have a good nights sleep.

thanx, at least smurf knows the signs appear serious enough to stick to the good progress.

smurf suspected a combo of things: dehydration, breathing through the mouth cos of the nose being so blocked thus drying the uvula out & then the alcohol with the cocaine.
