possible otc codeine ban in australia

i've spoken to my family gp - a very open man who's known me my entire life and someone i trust - informed me that they're currently discussing the banning of over the counter codeine medication. if the ban passes prescription codeine (like panadeine forte) will still be available (with a prescription of course) but heavily watched.

has anyone else heard anything about this? i assume that the drug companies will be heavily fighting this due to sales loss, but this has me rather concerned.

swim is currently growing opium poppies but swim doesn't think this is very practical as she uses codeine every-fucking-day and even in low doses opium would probably not be in her best interest.

sorry if this has been posted before~

Re: possible otc codeine ban in australia

where bouts in aus is swiy?
swim is in adelaide and hasnt heard a thing about it, he also frequents the health commissions web site for info and nothing there.
that would really really suck as swim uses a pack of panadeine 15 every 2 days and nurofen plus inbetween to keep the para use down to a minimum. they should keep it as is,no one dies from codeine use that we know of, and if some1 needs strong otc pain releif what then?? ibuprofen?? pfft!!

Re: possible otc codeine ban in australia

Saucy, I have heard this too. From a pharmacist in fact. It won't definitely happen, but it's a possibility. Australia is a pretty sensitive country when it comes to the possibility of people getting high. Look at all the taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. Not to mention we were the first one to ban kratom and salvia divinorum. Yeah, taking codeine off the shelf would suck...
