Alprazolam & Wisdom Teeth Operation

Swim has in his possession 1.0-1.5mg of Xanax in his possession. He also has his wisdom teeth operation coming up. Swim was thinking about maybe saving it for before the operation to take a bit of the edge off(would be swims first time taking them). The problem is they're going to be using an intravenous anesthetic to put swim to sleep. Unfortunately swim does not know what specific substance he will be given.

The question is with this information is it possible to tell if the combination is safe or not? Chances are swim would also be given a pain medication such as vicodin after the operation.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Xanax & Wisdom Teeth Operation

I certainly would NOT do this without informing the doctors first, and even then, I don't think they would be at all happy about it.

There is a chance the dose of anesthetic used will be off should swiy throw in the alprazolam variable, and this could have severe consequences.

Save it for use sometime after the operation.

Re: Xanax & Wisdom Teeth Operation

SWIM is getting a wisdom tooth pulled tomorrow coincidentally. He's getting local anaesthetic but has consulted people who have done this before and apparently it's completely pain-free, albeit a tad uncomfortable. Considering you're being put to sleep for this, there's no need for any Xanax at all.

Re: Xanax & Wisdom Teeth Operation

Benzos and opiates potentiate each other. If they're giving you enough to knock you out under the idea that you're not also on xanax, you're just increasing your chances that you'll wake up in the hospital, or won't wake up at all.

I still haven't gotten my wisdom teeth pulled and they've been coming in... They don't really hurt but my mom thought I already had them out (yeah, i don't know...), so I just never went in...

Removing the teeth shouldn't be too bad under anesthetics, but afterwords it seems to vary from person to person. My little sister took one vicodin of her prescription because she was afraid of her mouth swelling up and hurting, but that never happened, I talked to her on the phone the next day yet I was none the wiser.

My girlfriend, however, was in so much pain that she passed out on the way to the bathroom and hit her head. Looked miserable, can't wait to see if I need mine removed...

Nice sig, btw.

I'll be receiving the anaesthetic from our family dentist and getting the tooth pulled by a specialist about half an hour later at a different clinic. Most specialists of that kind aren't very skilled at actually applying the anaesthetic so that's why I need to go to two dentists on the day. It shouldn't be too bad. Some painkillers on standby afterwards if needed.

Re: Xanax & Wisdom Teeth Operation

IV for a wisdom tooth removal seems a bit overkill, but whatever I guess. SWIM just got a couple shots in the gum, which sucked, but wasn't nearly as bad as it sounds.

Re: Xanax & Wisdom Teeth Operation

Don't they give xanax to you before surgery anyway, even if you go under full anaesthesia? They did when I had my wisdom teeth extracted. I wasn't nervous at all and told the nurses I wouldn't need it. They said it would help me sleep it off better. I took half a bar anyway.

Afterwards, I wish I had kept the other half, hee...

The difference being that the anesthesiologist knows about it and can account for it when determining the appropriate dose for sedation.

Depending on whats used for sedation, could be a very important distinction.

Re: Xanax & Wisdom Teeth Operation

Yeah seems a bit of an overkill to SWIM too but that's how they're doing it. Swim's just going to play it safe and not take them. There's something about needles and veins that just seems unnerve swim...

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Re: Xanax & Wisdom Teeth Operation

I have good experience with dental work.

I have had 8 teeth removed. Wisdom teeth and what dentists call "12 year old molars" never came in for me. They would have fucked up my face, so I had all 8 removed over about a year.

Somewhat painful. It could have been worse, and I believe a lot of other people could really have a very painful extraction experience. I was given ZERO meds before and after the fact. No xanax, no painkillers, nothing. 8 teeth ripped out of my face. I was given anesthetic, of course, but nothing that helped except during the experience. I have a rather high pain tolerance, but never mentioned it. It was the only way I could handle the pain after it.

Lucky fuckers getting all kinds of opiates/benzos.

Swim went in high on opiates once for dental work. Swim was awake the whole time. Totally made it more tolerable
