Side effects - Codeine and hearing loss

Hi guys, I don't know if many of you are aware but recent research has suggested that chronic codeine use (and other opiates) can lead to permanent hearing loss. Now perhaps Swim is being paranoid but he does feel as though he has recently noticed a constant faint ringing in his ears. Could be nothing. Of course, it could be serious.

Swim would like to know if any others had noticed any deterioration in their hearing with chronic opiate use, particularly codeine. Alternatively, if you have any more news on the topic please share it with me.

One might notice it when you take codeine, perhaps due to histamine release, causing something in the inner ear to swell? Higher blood pressure, or the fluid in the inner ear pressure? This might cause higher ear pressure

SWIM has heard of temporary codeine-induced tinnitus but nothing permanent. Though SWIM wouldnt rule out the possibility of permanent damage if a temporary mechanism exists.

Actually tinnitus is a side effect of acetaminophen so if swiy gets his codeine from a cwe then it's most likely due to the acetaminophen.

I'm sticking to the fact that codeine can cause a fluid buildup/swelling due to histamine release, and thus the nerves in the ear are being inflammed/irritated


EDIT: Also do your codeine pills contain caffeine? Ringing of the ears is a known caffeine side effect

SWIM thinks SWIY's right about the histamine release and if so, then taking an antihistamine prior to taking the codeine should solve the problem.SWIM always takes Chlorpheniramine melate with his codeine as a potentiator which could explain why he hasn't had any problems with hearing loss. When swim takes his codeine he always has ringing in his ears and swim thinks SWIY's theory about the caffeine being the cause is right, since in swim's country only 500/30/8 pills are avaliable.

swim gets a ringing in his ears some times from red vain kratom which also releases histamines has never got it from codeine. but saying that swim gets nowhere near as itchy on codeine as when on kratom. swim would say its down to histamine release.

I wasn't aware of this being an effective Potentiator - can you tell me what you're basing this on, please? Not being picky I just wanna know more about it.

Anyway - SWIM has been a fairly regular user of Codeine for a few years, and has noticed absolutely no differences in or degradation of his hearing ability.
Would say "I hope that helps", but I know it won't lol...

I'm not discrediting your belief that you may be noticing hearing changes, but have you thought it could be a psychosomatic result of finding out about the research?

Clorpheniramine melate does not add to the euphoria of a codeine trip, but as a sedative antihistamine it makes the trip mellower and intensifies the nod the same way diphenhydramine does (as you posted in your codeine potentiation thread) also helps with the itching and counteracts the caffeine which really improves the trip overall.

Only notice it about an hour after ingestion, knew nothing about the research before noticing it

Swim posted a thread on hearing problems a while back; prior to reading about this research. Swim gets a really annoying twitchy sensation in his eardums that becomes almost as bad as the itches. If SWIY was to push back his ears without using his hands the sensation prduced is very similar though more intense.
Swim was only doing opiates once or twice a week but woke up unable to hear properly like he had a tonne of wax in his right ear. Luckily it cleared up but swim hasn't touched opiates since. Hardly anyone he's spoken to has experienced this..
