Netherlands - Is all the cannabis skunk?

Someone was telling me earlier about the difference between cannabis and skunk and how he prefers cannabis because it's natural and skunk is man-made, etc.

And I began to wonder, because I've mostly had weed in coffee shops in Amsterdam, and it's always been a lot stronger than what we get at home, so is it skunk that we get in Amsterdam? Is pretty much everything skunk these days? Or what's the story? I'm wondering if I've even had non-skunk cannabis to compare the skunk with, or maybe I've only had cannabis and never skunk. How would I know what I got?
