A Westminster SWAT team shot and killed two dogs during a Tuesday evening drug raid.
The officers were serving a warrant to a home near 108th Avenue and Moore Street, which is not far from the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield. Police arrived at the home around 6:20 p.m. and tried to arrest a resident. The dogs attacked the officers after the suspect ran from the living room, according to a police statement.
Police said the dogs charged before officers could use pepper spray or Tasers. The dogs continued attacking after they were hit with the first shots, police said.
One dog was identified as a pit bull. The breed of the other is unknown.
Investigator Trevor Materasso, a public information officer with the Westminster Police Department, said officers have experience handling agitated dogs and lethal force was a last resort.
"They know the difference between a dog that's barking and growling because of a defense mechanism and one that's aggressive and going to bite an officer," he said.
The narcotics case has been turned over to the North Metro Drug Task Force and is ongoing. One neighbor said marijuana was removed from the home. One person was arrested at the scene.
