Amphetamine overdose/bad trip caused permanent damage to brain?
SWIM has been smoking marijuana for over 5 years regularly but has been depressed the past 2 years. His father died abou 4 years ago as well has his brother the year after. SWIM decided to try ecstasy twice about 3 years ago and it went well, as well as shrooms a few times. The past 2 years he has felt like someone else almost. He sometimes doesn't remember a certain word and has problems socializing, even with friends. His short term memory is not good and he has had a bad stomach for several years (going to the bathrooom several times a day). A few days ago he tried amphetamine for the first time and it did not go well. He did less than 1g total but in several small doses over 24 hours. About 4 hours after the last line (he snorted) he started to hallucinate (the text he was reading would start to move and soon he would see flashes, dots and scratches appear for milli-seconds at a time). He would also feel like he was being poked all over his body. After going to the doctor he finds out that nothing wrong happened to his body (except having difficulties with his peeing muscle). But after two days since the hallucination, he still feels pain around in his body but it comes and goes. And his legs and arms might twitch at times. He also sometimes hallucinates a little, seeing scratches or dots but not objects stretching like when he was having the bad trip. The inside of his left ear (to him) feels different than the right, and even his eyes hurt a little. But most of all it feels like his brain has expanded and is pushing against the skull. This frightens him and he thinks a stroke might be coming. Maybe caused from his brain bleeding?
Has anyone had a similar experience? What is weird is that this is not caused from long use but from a one-time experience. Was it an overdose? And could he have caused brain damage? Maybe he had already had one, possibly from ecstasy since he's felt different the last few years. Is he in any danger? No one who has tried amphetamine that he's heard of has had that brain-expanding-feeling several days after the event. What should he do? Please help. |

Re: Amphetamine overdose/bad trip caused permanent damage to brain?
Hmmmm... SWIM really is not too sure what the deal is here, it could just be an overdose of amphets hallucinations and weird body feelings being common, however you've mentioned a few things that SWIM cant really explain for you but don't worry... chances are it's nothing.
I'd say if it dosent subside relativley soon (use your own discretion here) to go to the dr and get a referral to see some kind of specialist, what sort I'm not sure but some kind of specialist (GP's don't know squat diddley) I hope things work out ok |

Thanks for your reply
Is there anything SWIM can explain further to help understand the situation? It does seem very unique compared to other people's experiences..How long should SWIM wait before going to a specialist? SWIM was thinking of going tomorrow (that's 3 nights of sleep after the overdose).

Re: Amphetamine overdose/bad trip caused permanent damage to brain?
Methamphetamine can take 3-5 days to leave the body, and if you had an amount that caused even a slight psychosis then it was probably too much, depending on your definition of overdose you could call it that because you over-dosed. 1 gram is a lot for one person with no tolerance to take. What method were you using? Have you slept much since? Sleep deprivation can cause symptoms similar and worse than amphetamine toxicity.
Remember also that a lot of people get anxiety and nerves taking a new drug for the first time, and these feelings can manifest themselves with physical symptoms. When one is high on a drug for the first time it is common to over analyze the situation, as there is an awareness to your mind and body that wasn't there previously. In my opinion (and it is just that, I am certainly no Dr) I think in a few days you will be fine. Drink lots of water, eat well, take vitamins, sleep, exercise and take care of yourself for a few days, it will all help things come right quicker. Good luck to you. |

Re: Amphetamine overdose/bad trip caused permanent damage to brain?
I agree with ~Lostgurl~ and would add that brain-damage is highly unlikely. If SWIM isn't feeling better in a few days - schedule another appointment with a physician. Tell the doctor what has happened. He/She will schedule some tests and all will get sorted out. Don't let SWIM do this again - SWIM will be fine in short order.

Re: Amphetamine overdose/bad trip caused permanent damage to brain?
SWIM will help by their personal account of SP (speed psychosis), but has just dropped a mini one though, so must be aware to stick to the point. hahhaahhahhaa (a fall off the wagon
phets)Schizo express, aka, Speed psychosis. Not a mental illness, a chemical imbalance. Not brain damaging, but like you SWIMMEY shared the same worry. The worrys can seem bizzare for a few days or weeks, SWIMMY thinks this is just the psychosis tailing off. I felt tired mentally and had a few physically weak times and appetite loss too, but I am fine. Childhood is the only other episodes I had (only recognized as so in adulthood) No AP med experience, its gone by the time the shrink speaks, but helped mine with B Vitamins and other stuff, see below. Lecture hat not on, but, a gram over 24hrs is a biggie for someone who hasnt done speed before. Big amounts can trigger the episodes off too. This SWIM made the same error first time, taking a quarter, but should have been a teenth, so no lectures. Could the digestive complaints you mention be anxiety? Think of all the work the organs involved have to do when anxious, that must have an effect on the digestive system, it does here in SWIMMYS guts. Physically, the body can feel yuk during (if compus mentus enough to notice) or after a Psychosis. Menatlly, Psychosis is the brain, trying to dream while the body is awake. We need to dream, and swim around in our subconscious. Stay hydrated even when not on it, speed is a thirsty bugger. Heres a little list of vitamins/eatables/doables for baseheads on or off the stuff.Multivitamin B complex (B3 prevents psychosis [see above] but all b complex needs to be taken together to work] Complex carbs while whizzing, eating at comedown seems too late for SWIMMY. Bananas, oats, cereals, potatoes. Salad, fruit. Avoid vitamin C for a couple hours after bombing. Sleep after comedown or as soon as possible. Valerian and Kanna to stop the voms and shakes, and comedown blues. Addiction and psychosis dont happen to all baseheads, but they did me. Hope this helps <goes off to read thread> humdroid added 23 Minutes and 0 Seconds later... Niacin (Vitamin B3) plays a part in preventing psychotic episodes. Someone who knows more can expand, but swimmy never had any more episodes during their past habit, when Niacin was taken as part of the vits. Last edited by humdroid; 03-09-2008 at 05:01. Re: Amphetamine overdose/bad trip caused permanent damage to brain?
How did this turn out? SWIM is prescribed 60mgs./day of dextroamphetamine and tries to stay within that amount as more does not produce any euphoria, none, any dose. With that g. who knows what cut was used. Man, be careful, smart and safe.

Quote:
Summarized the symptoms are : physiological : - recurring stitching in hands and wrists - stiff and touch-sensitive throat - sensations inside the skull (no pain, not even unpleasent but unsettling) - tight chest - dry eyes - very few stamina in physical activities -> hypertension, tachyardia - when drugs are consumed (despite alcohol and probably downers) -> intense tremor in right pectoral muscle and upper arm, intense hypertension psychological : - generel increased anxiety - lack of emotions - when drugs are consumed (despite alcohol and probably downers) -> very high danger to get a panic attack Panic Trip 1: Substances : Alcohol, Indo-Kratom, Cannabis, (2-DPMP many hours before) Gender/Size/Weight : male/5'9/160lbs Experiences : occasional drug usage Dosage : 3 Beers, 10g Kratom, one hit cannabis (with Damiana) Duration of panic : 10 hours (!!!) -40:00 : 2 mg 2-DPMP -17:00 : 0.5 mg 2-DPMP 00:00 : it is 5:30 p.m. 5g Kratom are ingested on empty stomach 01:00 : tenseness is present, which is ignored while having dinner with family, 2 beers are consumed 07:00 : SWIM wants to write lyrics, 5g Kratom is ingested on nearly empty stomach, 1 beer is consumed 08:00 : 1 hit Cannabis is smoked with Damiana 08:30 : SWIM is suprised about the intense high, he also has a few hallucinations, little lightnings are crossing the air (this is common when SWIM uses the Kratom/MJ-combo), in the mirror it seems that his body is surrounded by an aura. 09:00 : Hypertension sets in, SWIM did not have that since he smoked too much weed in middle school 09:30 : Hypertension and normal health states occur alternately, SWIM thinks, that should be over in a few minutes and he can begin to write his lyrics ... 10:00 : FAIL! The hypertension-states remain and his right pectoral muscle and right overarm are cramping horribly. Also his throat is getting stiff (caused by too high blood pressure) and his head feels bubbled up (no real headache present). Nevertheless the fear of dying is present. 15:00 : no changes ... SWIM walks around in his parents house and finds some AT1-Antagonist in a cubboard. He takes 80mg and hopes it beats the hypertension. 17:00 : no changes 18:00 : blood pressure decreases finally. Cramps remain 30:00 : cramps remain ... SWIM feels exhausted, can sleep finally SWIM first assumed that his pipe was dirty but he smoked through it many times (he does not smoke daily, rather weekly) when it was even dirtier without side effects. Maybe remains of other substances were in the pipe-abysm, you cant see through it, it is a black non-water-pipe. Panic Trip 2 : No psychoactive substances were ingested for 48 hours. 0:00 : 5g Kratom are ingested. 0:30 : Anxiety appears, SWIM gets very weak and thinks : "WTF is wrong with me!!!!?" His throat is getting tight, his voice is suppressed. 1:00 : SWIM goes outside. While walking his BP enhances. He cant stop to touch his heart. His eyes are getting dry. 3:00 : SWIM drinks 2 Beers and feels much better. SWIM still hopes that everything is caused by generell anxiety-issues and not by permanent damage due to 2-DPMP-consume. He was also at the doctor and got an appointment for 24-hours-BP-testing (you walk around with that device all day). He also consumed 3g Kratom today and did not panic but also could not appreciate the Kratom ... Sorry that I abused your thread, but SWIM was suprised that SWIY had the same symptoms. Maybe it has something to do with histamine-production or thyroid overreaction. Any doctors present at the forum ? ![]() SWIM never got these problems from amphetamine-consumption. But also he did not consume 1g in one day/night. Otherwise perhaps he would have gotten these symptoms. How is SWIY now ? Did everything fade ? Hope SWIY is okay ! DION |

Re: Amphetamine overdose/bad trip caused permanent damage to brain?
Sorry to hear about your bereavements - its always a bad time and nothing much can be said to make it better. 4 years mourning is a bit too much though and depression though triggered by bereavement, is not going to be helped too much by speed.
Swims canary once almost fell off its perch with speed which seems to be a good drug if your in a good frame of mind and state of health. Comedowns are notorious and hallucinations, a gram for a newbie could well bring them about. As stated, speed stays in the body for 3 or 4 days. Anyone who wonders why people pay 3, 4 or 5 times the amount of a gram of coke, as compared to speed, need only contemplate a Monday at the office, on a speed comedown. Coke users do not pay so much for the coke (they love it, but...) its the price for the comedown. Speed, is a KILLER comedown - and as much a confidence thief as it is a confidence giver. Your king of socialising for 12-24 hours, then a nervous wreck for 3 days. As for brain damage, you will be ok there. The anti drugs lobby who point to brain cells dying neglect to state that the human brain has a lifespan. We all damage it a little with booze, drugs, even jogging or having an orgasm. Anyone drinking, using drugs whilst jogging and having an orgasm, is likely brain dead, not damaged. Good luck. Try not to worry so much. Avoid speed as an aid to depression! |
