Kratom liqour
I was discussing the possibility of making kratom beer with my buddies, whic is an interesting concept.
Another idea (probably a lot easier as well), is making a kratom liquor. Do you have some ideas about this? How would SWIY do this? |

Would it ferment properly? an Unknown person has always wanted to try fermenting different psychoactives but because of limited knowledge in brewing didn't want to risk accidentally using a plant that'll create methanol.

i heard it is possible to make alcohol out of anything with carbon in it, for instance in some desert there are nomads that make alcohol out of card board so it must be possible but i dont know how u would go about it.

SWIM has made Kratom liquor. He used a half pint of 80% ethanol and 150g of crushed bali leaves. He let the leaves soak for a week, and strained the tincture off. Then he watered the result down to 40% (vodka strength).
That gave him 16oz of liquid, which is a little under 10g Kratom/per oz. The result was a golden brown liquor that was really really grossly bitter. He added simple-syrup (sugar water) until the taste was vaguely palatable. It was a lot easier to drink over ice than neat. The results were encouraging, definitely more than a shot of vodka - but less than 10g of Bali powder would give with a Toss-n-wash. Since then, SWIM has experimented with adding in a water-boil after the alcohol soak, and the resulting 10% tonic is decidedly more effective. As for adding to a beer - SWIM has also been considering this, instead of hops as a bittering agent, why not use kratom? It's certainly bitter enough. SWIM isn't sure if the boiling temp is too hot for Kratom's key attributes...he's heard that a full-boil will degrade the potency. If so, then the Kratom could be added at the end of the boil and left in the primary fermentation. He doesn't think that the low alcohol would really do much for extraction, but who knows? He'll give it a show next batch of beer. In terms of distilling a kratom spirit - again, the boiling temp is a concern. SWIM also isn't sure that the properties would distill over with the alochol. Worth a try though. He's been meaning to rig up a smaller still - his 5G reflux still is a little much for projects like this. |

This thread has had me thinking re: Kratom Beer.
One problematic thing with beer is that you're talking about a LOT of Kratom. Homebrewers usually brew in 5 Gallon batches. Suppose you want to have 8-10g Kratom per pint. There are approx 40 pints in 5 gallons. That's 400G of Kratom. Unless you've got your own tree - that's one expensive experiment. It's a pretty sure thing that it will WORK...but it's not clear at ALL if it will be palatable. Actually...most people drink more than one beer. So maybe you really only want 4-5g Kratom per beer. So call it 200-250g per batch. As for the flavor/beer-style....My thinking is that, theoretically, you'd want a stout. A dark coffee and molasses stout. A lighter beer tends to want a sharper, more floral hops. Thoughts? |
