Mushroom Hunting in Virginia

Has anyone ever found magic mushrooms in the woods? I live in VA and wanna go shroom hunting cause they're too expensive to buy here but there aren't any cow fields near my house. I have a guide to mushrooms that says that some species of psilocybe mushrooms grow on decaying wood and moss in forests. I was wondering if anyone has ever found these and how hard they are to find? Also does anyone know what i might be able to find growing wild here in VA? Please help!

Unfortunately, VA doesn't have much as far as wild magic mushrooms
goes... almost everyone who goes out hunting in that state finds
nothing. Although unconfirmed, these species have been said to be
found there:

psilocybe caerulipes

panaeolus subbalteatus

gymnopilus aeruginosus

The first two are probably going to be your best bet, gymnopilus
aeruginosus is supposed to be pretty rare. Just be careful of
toxic lookalikes.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what the best conditions to find these shrooms are? I know ones that grow on dung are best found following a rain and at night but does that also apply to these shrooms? Also what month is the best to find them? Yea VA sucks the only shrooms i can find to buy are like $60-$100 a quarter. But info would really be appreciated.

Psilocybin mushrooms will grow at temperatures between 45-85°F.
However, if it is too hot, they will produce less psilocybin.
You'll have the best luck in fall and maybe spring - September seems to
be a really common month for mushroom hunting. The best
conditions to find them will be during periods of cool air and rain...
1-2 days after rainfall is a good time to go look. I also
wouldn't worry about going at night unless you're going to be on
someone's property or something. Oh yeah, you'll also find more
in well-drained areas, like on slopes and places like that - too much
water causes their mycelium to rot... that's why fall is the best time
to find them - the dry summer allows the mycelium to develop, and all
the moisture in the fall causes mushrooms to grow.

Hope this helps you out a little.

Talking Re: Mushroom Hunting in Virginia

i live in va also idk if im the luckiest person alive but me and 2 of my friends picked 2 pounds of liberty caps the other day in a couple cow fields. Just look for em. if you know the owner of the field find out if he feeds his cows oats because that raises the likelihood of you finding them

There is always the possibility of growing your own. For what you say you would spend on a quarter, you could purchase everything needed to grow them. All the info for doing this is pinned in this section.

Hunting in Northern Virginia

Some advice, please. I know next to nothing about growing or finding magic mushies (except in Scotland). Am I wasting my time looking for them in this part of the USA? Do they grow wild here? I'd love to know where to look, if anybody could steer me in the right direction. Sure would be great to come across some liberty caps, but I have a feeling that's wishful thinking. This climate's probably not right for those. Thanks in advance for any tips.

Happy Trails,

Scotty

Yea sorry ScottyG, SWIM lives in Maryland and has gone hunting numerous times with no luck at all. The climates around these parts just do not support alot of magic mushroom growth. Your best bet would be a cattle field after a few days of humid, overcast, rainy weather. SWIM knows other SWIMs that have had some luck with these locations and circumstances in the area around maryland and virginia.

Also do some research on SWIM and self incrimination before posting again.

puff read the rules and learn to use SWIM. And as for the question it depends on the species of mushroom as to when it will grow. Use the search engine and youll find all the info you could ever need on the subject.

Virginia sucks when it comes to active shrooms... best bets there would
probably be either psilocybe caerulipes or panaeolus subbalteatus. Even
those can be kinda hard to find around there...

Pan subbs grow in manure, compost, poo-fertilized lawns. Spring and fall
are the best times to find those.

Caerulipes is a wood-lover, found on woodchips. Season is May-Sept. A
few years ago, like 80 people were arrested in West Virginia for picking
these things.

Be safe...

Surely, what you need is an inniculated (sp) field, and some cows to run around in it. Mushrooms can grow almost anywhere... What you want is a rainy night, followed by a nice humid day the next day... You have to pick them in the early morning.
