Sobriety & Drug Using Nightmares

swim gets nightmares about using drugs and getting arrested. He also gets nightmares of just general drama caused by drugs..
In most of his dreams he takes something like a benzo or opiate. And he walks around the dream and has little memory and ends up in situations in the dream that he does not remember how it got into them.. its scary shit.
part of swim dislikes the dreams but another part thinks they help him remember how bad drugs are even if its just a dream.

SWIM actually had a dream just like this last night. Wasn't that scary though because it was this huge obese cop attacking his car with boxing gloves. Similar concept though.

SWIM only dreams of using drugs when SWIM has not actually used anything and is trying not to Its like a drugs wet dream most frustrating

this happens to SWIM a lot and it is very frustrating when trying to stay clean and you remember parts of your dream like getting fucked up and shit and several times, SWIM wakes up and it takes a while for SWIM to recognize that it was all a dream

This is definitely quite common. I think that when drugs become such a huge part of one's life- both the action of getting/using them, as well as the overall state of being high, and the constant thinking about them, that becomes one's reality. When one gets sober, it takes some time for one to relearn that drugs are not part of their reality anymore. Part of it is memory too, and those memories will always be there to some extent, but they lose their hold over time. Swim found that the had extremely vivid using dreams for at least 8-9 months, perhaps more like a year. It has been quite some time now, but at first it was pretty much every night. The closest she had to a using dream was a dream last week where she and her brother were walking down the street and the cops were harassing her and trying to plant weed on her, it was actually really terrifying and stressful, but nothing like the intensity of the dreams she used to have about shooting up and such.. Overall, I think once your body and mind adjust to being sober, the dreams will become less frequent and less disturbing. But then again, even if one is sober, one can still have a large portion of their reality influenced by drugs- ie. talking drugs on a forum like this, having addiction in the family or friends who use, watching cop shows on tv where they arrest drug users, whatever. So I do notice that those themes will come up on occasion, but it is both much less frequent, and much less bothersome, than the addiction dreams that one had in the past. Hope this helps!! SWIM did a little bid in jail a few months back. His dreams usually consisted of doing/selling drugs, ex-girl friends, getting arrested and dying. They were terrifying but not the worst. The most painful dreams were the ones where you'd be out with friends or family or sitting at home watching TV. Then you wake up to a dark cell, sometimes thinking and hoping you're back in your own bed. SWIM discussed this with his friends on his unit and they all said they experienced the same thing.

SWIM has been clean from cocaine for some time now and still suffers from "user dreams" SWIM has dreams of coming across large amounts of money, and buying cocaine... he's doing other drugs, getting arrested, going blind because of the drug, or waking up in sweats fearing he used again or would pop positive for a piss test. These aren't normal dreams, they're BIZARRE and often accompanied by horrible, graphic, very realistic nightmares. It got so bad SWIM didn't want to sleep at times, and would often use marijuana and alcohol to suppress his REM sleep.

Swim recently had a dream in which he tried LSD for the first time. very odd dream, he's not sure what to make of it, but it wasn't all that unpleasant. He remembers seeing a lot of swirly colors and morphing shapes.

Swim has never consumed LSD.

SWIM has been clean from cocaine for about 6mo. now, he was heavily addicted after less than a year of regular use.

SWIM did and he had the same type of nightmares.

SWIM just had a drug using nightmare last night....he dreamed he was smoking crack all day and this isn't even his drug of choice....then after smoking, he went to a club and was rolling balls on pure MDMA and then at the end of the night, bought an oz of heroin and was satisfied

this nightmare scared the shit outta SWIM when he woke up especially knowing the feeling of being satisfied after using all those drugs since SWIM is staying clean

when clean and sober those dreams are scary... what is really scary is when you have a dream of getting loaded and swim wakes up and the dream was pleasant not scary.

Swim quit for legal reasons and other negative consequences caused by drugs,, mainly being homeless and having his family cut him off completely.. no communication, no help, no bail bond, and no school.

who is posting and saying they are in recovery but isn't? i know for me I consider myself in recovery from my drug of choice and have abstained pretty well not for almost 4 1/2 months

NIK has 13 + months clean from IV cocaine. For a long time he awoke from drug dreams with his heart racing over 120 bpm.

At this point he still has drug dreams once in a great while, but they don't bother him any longer, and don't affect him physiologically either; he remembers when he had them but doesn't wake up in a pool of sweat feeling like he just slammed an 8-ball.

It gets better with time friends.

Psychedelics in moderation are something swim one day hopes he can do... Swim would still consider himself in recovery if he used mescaline or a 2c and still would consider his sobriety date to be jan 11. Therfore he considers your 4 and a half months to be completely solid and legit.

Speaking of that some one should start a thread.. Swim toys with this idea a lot... Swim wants to use mescaline or a 2c when he gets a year...

i couldn't tell if you were being saracastic or not lol.... you know how some people say that if you are not completely clean off of EVERYTHING than that means you really aren't clean (like NA) and that is what I thought you were referring to....how much longer does SWIY have until they reach a year?

When Swim is taking a break from drugs, he dreams about them just about every single night until he does something again.

Sometimes good dreams, sometimes nightmares, and sometimes just neutral in feel.

swim takes a year in 128 days... recently due to struggle in math class swim has been thinking about using drugs.. he has no urge what so ever to use opiates his drug of choice but thinks often about benzodiazapine usage which would be a mistake... swim also thinks about pulling the old vile of tiletamine he has stashed at a friends house and putting him self in a medically induced coma for a couple of days.
