You should watch out, crickets are omnivores and will attack animals much larger then themselves if allowed. If your toad is well fed and not in the mood to defend it self it may be injured by large crickets. Probably best not to let them stick around for too long.

swits bufo is a loafer it would take a tactical strike from an army of domesticated cats to take him down.

SWIM wouldn't worry about the crickets harming the toad. They'll only eat dead things. These toads are quite capable of getting out of the way if necessary. SWIM feeds mostly king mealworms in a bowl and crickets on occasion. easier and cheaper (for a group..).
These toads are very personable, tame and make really good pets. |

Unfortunately swim has not found much information on what to feed his frog. Frogger has been living off crickets for the past 3 years Swim has to change his diet up. He does dust the crickets though.

SWIM also feeds pinkie mice and king mealworms. They seem to be fine with any insect though. SWIM has has them for about 4 years and they are really healthy. They will eat stuff out of a large bowl in the cage.

Re: When this happens its time to clean out swims bufo alvarius cage
Odd use of the term "loafer", round here that would be something incredibly lazy.
I was trying to remember info from years ago when I used to keep a few frogs, maybe I'm mixing crickets up with warning against using live mice as feeders. Although I did find this link which makes me look a bit less crazy. Not conclusive proof of carnivorous activity in crickets, but... Gutloading is another option to increase nutrients, you can feed the crickets nutritional supplements that will increase their food value. Last edited by Potter; 09-12-2008 at 23:15. Toads do not need UV light. They are nocturnal and hide from the sun.
UVB activates vit D to allow calcium metabolism in reptiles. |

Though if you get them a nocturnal heat lamp, sorta looks like a black light, they quite enjoy basking in the heat.

Re: When this happens its time to clean out swims bufo alvarius cage
Do you know that from experience SWIKhrma ?
Toads come out at night to escape the heat and conserve moisture since it is more humid then. During dry periods and during the day these toads will bury themselves for protection. SWIM has found they do best at room temp - no heat. A heat lamp would be dangerous in that they could easily become dehydrated if not able to escape it or if their water dried out, which can happen fast. SWIM has found it to be unnecessary. |

Re: When this happens its time to clean out swims bufo alvarius cage
Nobody's apologies for mentioning UV lamps. Don't know what they were thinking when that was being written. Amphibians are pretty damn delicate and UV isn't going to be good for them.
If you are looking to keep the tank warm, there are electric pads and rocks designed especially for herps that won't place them at risk for burns. Another option, if you have a large water feature in the tank is a fishtank heater, make sure it is designed for the amount of water, not the size of the tank (as a 10 gallon toad tank, probably only has 1 gallon of water or so). |
