Is it common for pain management doctors to prescribe oxycodone?
SWIM have recurring back pain from a serious muscle/connective tissue injury SWIM had 2 years ago. It seems that doctors are only prescribing hydro to the people SWIM knows, even older people with severe recurring pain.
SWIM has a very high tolerance to opioids in general, but particularly hydrocodone. dasfonzier added 1221 Minutes and 13 Seconds later... Well SWIM experienced a severe back spasm while doing his weight lifting. SWIM went to the ER and sure enough they prescribed 5mg hydro and flexeril. This isn't really helping though... Re: Is it common for pain management doctors to prescribe oxycodone?
Depends on the derrived orgin. Theres a map that gave relative info on this forum somewhere, sorry I don't have the link. It shows different areas of the U.S. and different pain medications, statistically.
In my area, it is uncommon for people to get prescribed oxycodone, inless they have re-occurring pain as you mention. Or elderly people, in some situations the doctors will prescribe it to 25 year olds but usually because of abused meds, recreational useage, anyone below 25 has a hard time getting oxycodone. So see it all depends on the area. |

Re: Is it common for pain management doctors to prescribe oxycodone?
Oxy is barely being used anymore. Swim knows several pain docs and they all refuse to prescribe it. Generally for more severe pain they use ms contin and methadone.
Swim would suggest trying to stay away from opiates as much as possible. Ask for a pain relieving snri or a tricylic anti depressant, both of these have been shown to work very well for pain, depending on the originates. Also, if swiy is on one of these he will have to take less opiates for adaquete pain relief. Swim is very curious as to why swiy wants oxy. To swim it seems that people would only ask for oxy if they wanted to abuse it. Talk to your doctors and try something else even if only for two weeks, if other treatments don't work, swiy will have dealt with two weeks of pain, which is very hard (swim would know), but worth it to prove to swiy that he is not an addict. Additionally taking two weeks off should help to clear up swiy's mu and k opiod receptors so that his tolerance can decrease and make the hydrocodone effective once again. When on opiates, swiy really has to think to himself whether he is asking for a stronger script for pain or for euphoria/recreation. It's very hard to be honest with oneself. If swiy must stay on opiates, ask your doctor for special non abusable medication. For instance, make sure that if swiy gets a perscription for ms contin that he buys the type where the timed release portion cannot be taken off. Be careful and good luck with relieving the pain. |
