Physical brain deterioration from drugs?
pre warning smurf did'nt pay much attention at school to biology for example. smurf was wondering, smurf has heard of the silly myths of swimmers thinking holes melt in ones brain etc... smurf does'nt believe in this that's logic to understand, one can't operate with holes in your brain..
smurf heard from someone & was wondering if ones brain does show any physical signs of damage. example many years of snorting copious amounts of powder? if you think of how much small pieces of dust or things is going up there. smurf knows how it is to have hectic sinus infections & they can even lead to blindness. this along with the effects of ecstasy to the seratonin on the brain & & & etc... so does any one know if there has been tumors or different shaping, softening or hardening, collapsing or swelling, build up that has taken place on a persons brain? maybe from a autopsy...? the body clearly does take strain & show. the kidneys & heart too. sylenth added 37 Minutes and 2 Seconds later... i found this on a site: Brain chemistry. Repeated and chronic use of addictive drugs results in brain changes of unknown reversibility. Drugs can reduce energy use in the brain, change gene function, brain signals, the shape of brain cells, brain networks, and activity in specific brain regions. Some drugs are frankly toxic to the brain. Cocaine promotes spasm of blood vessels resulting in reduced blood flow in human brain. Frequent exposure to amphetamine, methamphetamine, and ecstasy produce toxicity and damage to specific brain cells. Heavy alcohol or inhalant use (e.g. toluene) can produce profound irreversible toxic effects and shrinkage of brain grey matter. Last edited by sylenth; 06-09-2008 at 20:48. Quote:
Insufflated drugs are absorbed through the mucous membranes of one's nose into the bloodstream. Effects on the brain are achieved via the bloodstream and diffusion across the blood-brain barrier They DO NOT act physically/directly on the brain. In fact, unless one has a hole in their cribriform plate (!) there is no way the physical powder will hit the brain substance (and believe me, one would know if there was a hole in their cribriform plate!) |

Re: physical brain deterioration from drugs?
It is swims understanding that these holes do in fact happen but they are not actually holes in the literal sense. Swim believes (though swim could be wrong, swim is not a neuroscientist) that these are called holes because they for one thing look like holes when using imaging equipment to view. These holes are more so areas of the brain which are not working properly. Drug use does affect the brain's ability to function. For example, heavy cocaine use severly limits the functioning of the frontal lobe of the brain. Swims doctor has explained that it takes about 2 years after abstinence after heavy drug use for the brain to fully repair itself to it's most optimal state. It appears that drug use takes its toll on the brain, some of which is reversible, some of which is not.

smurf agrees agree with jatelka personally & was wondering about the drugs & crap that go up there that if an infection is caused if it could get to the brain? since sinus infections can cause something severe as blindness. Last edited by sylenth; 30-07-2008 at 19:54. Reason: added |

Re: physical brain deterioration from drugs?
If one does a search on Dr Daniel Amen, he has done some research on the brain with respect to drug use as well as other brain issues.
