what happened to the flower childrens social movement?

i was born quite a few years after the whole hippie thing (i was born in 1980) so i admittedly have a rather limited amount of knowledge on the subject...but i have always wondered what happened to the hippie movement. it seems to me that the whole generation grew up and abandoned their ideals (often to the point of fighting against the very things they were fighting for in the 60's)

why is this? were their ideals doomed from the beginning? just idol fantasies by naive youth? what happened to the people in that generations idealism?
