salvia's kappa-opiod agonist effects on methadone?

because salvia is a kappa-opioid receptor agonist would it affect the action of methadone in ones system, or have any other negative effects like putting a person on methadone maintenance into withdrawls? i ask this cause methadone is a full mu-opioid agonist.

Re: salvia's kappa-opiod agonist effects on methadone?

SWIM can only speak from his observation, as he has yet to read a study on the combination of the two.

SWIM has a friend who takes methadone to combat heroin withdrawals. Salvia still worked very potently, and did not affect anything really.

However, this is only one person's experience. Salvia could make one feel very dysphoric, or send someone into a bad trip, in which one would feel the urge to take other "medicines" to combat this feeling. Luckily, the salvia trip is so short that one can return to his/her senses quickly.

Chemically, swim doesn't know of anything that would mess with the methadone, but psychologically, it is possible that one could get back into a psychological dependence.

Re: salvia's kappa-opiod agonist effects on methadone?

Someone I know well has taken 80 units of methadone/day for 5 years, been on a program a total of 7 years; while the person has used Salvia Divinorum maybe 20 times over the last 2 years, on one occasion they experienced strong Opiate cravings for hours following the trip.
The Salvia trip in question was the largest dose of Salvia ever taken by that person; two "full lung" inhalations of high quality, 20x Salvia leaf, with a lighters' flame applied to the leaf matter for the entire "pull". This dose was sufficient to totally remove the person from ordinary, body consciousness, and was reported to be disturbing for the first few minutes, as extreme hallucinations occurred while ordinary consciousness and "sense of self" was suppressed. Apparently, the intense visual hallucinations were disorienting, and coupled with the separation from normal ego consciousness made it difficult for the person to know what was happening to them for the first 1/3 of the experience.
The reported experience appears to be at or near the peak of a Salvia trip scale that one can remain conscious through - certain Salvia sites claim at some higher dose, an person does not remain conscious, or remember their trip (Like taking too much ketamine). I havent actually spoken to anyone who has blacked out on Salvia, though.
I suspect that, as this is the only instance of opiate craving I have had reported, that it probably had more to do with the subjective nature of that particular trip, than an objective pharmacological effect. However, that person has not attempted another dose of Salvia at that strength again yet; will post, if repeated experiences suggest a relationship between large doses of salvia and cravings for opiates in Methadone Maint.
