Pharmacology - another Q about cwe , just trying to get it right

hi all, i know cold water extraction is covered to death...anyways...

if sum1 were to perform a cwe with codeine/para as ingredients, when the crushed pills are in water solution in the freezer it is taken out and there is small amounts of crystallisation on the top,a few white frozen lumps floating and the bottom white sediment if frozen along with a layer of water in the middle.....

-my question is does the frozen layer at the bottom contain codeine?
-should i let the bottom layer melt then filter it or is it just a chalky compound with no active ingredient?
-the crystalls on the top layer, if poured into the filter along with the solution, will the paracetemol melt and flow thru the filter or will it remain chalky hence being filtered?
-if the filered solution is a little cloudy, but not that bad would that mean most of the para was filtered successfully as in the filter there seems to be a fair bit of the white chalky substance?
-if sum1 re filtered the lightly cloudy solution, would the remaining paracetemol get filtered out as the chalk or would it have dissolved and passed the filter?

sorry for the seemingly waste of a time questions, but its just a matter of getting it right...

ps what does swim and swiy mean??

I only know what i have read about cold water extractions, so i can only really answer one thing, if a (any) solution is cloudy then that means it has solids in it and they are not dissolved.

SWIM and SWIY means Someone Who Isn't Me/You and it is used to avoid Self Incrimination.

the solution that is is filtered that is still cloudy, would the solids in it be paracetemol or just chalk/talc?? so in other words should swim re-filter it until clear? or would the amount of para in it be negligible seeing there was a bit of the white solids caught in the filter?

I couldn't say if it is paracetamol or not, but my guess is it could as easily be paracetamol as it could be fillers/chalk/binder etc. It is a good idea to try and get it as clear as possible.

i did my first cwe earlier on and when i put the solution into the filter ,(2 napkins,just experimenting for now) i forgot to wet the napkins...so it is there filtering away, me not noticing anything, i go to add the last bit of the solution into the filter and notice that the part of the napkins over hanging the edge of the glass are dripping.....i immediately think wtf and straight after think , oh u dum fcuk , so i basically let the rest filter and then i squeezed the napkins into the glass and just about doubled the quantity of the filtered solution and not letting any of the filtered crap pass thru....

like i said just experimenting to c how it goes, and my chemist which is about 2 minute walk will sell me how much of the 15mg codeine i want, but i choose to get the 10mg ones as they come in boxes of 100 for about $20, pretty cheap if u ask me and justifiable to sacrifice a few for the sake of experimenting

I don't know about using napkins to do it, best to get some coffee filters or something, there is a Cold Water Extraction FAQ that should give all the info needed.

Napkins filter surprisingly well (better then most coffee filters I've used). Alas, you waste more by using them and there's the constant risk of it breaking. You can place a pre-wet napkin inside a coffee filter to get the best of both worlds.

Well i can't argue with what works for people. I had read that coffee filters are probably the best option for the price.

Never had to freeze a CWE before, and coffee filters are magic for just about anything. Generic cheap ones from a dollar store are good enough. If your coffee filters don't work, try another type/brand.

I think your onto something there, Swim will have to give that a go.

Is there a certain type or sized coffe filter swim should look out for on his journies of CWE? Swim dont drink coffe so has no idea about the varriations of the filters.

In swim's opinion the safest way of doing a cwe is with scientific filters, since they have much smaller holes than coffee filters. Of course, that's if swiy has them avaliable...
