How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
Swim has found a blackberry merlot he really, really enjoys the taste of.Unfortunately like any merlot swim gets a pounding and nasty headache from drinking it.Is there anything swim can do to stop this from happening? It seems as if the cause of these headaches is up for debate in the scientific community. But swim doesn't really care about the cause,he just wants to enjoy his wine headache free.Someone please help!

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
Keeping hydrated, not drinking to quickly, a meal before one drinks might help. Drinking a glass of water before going to bed may help the head effects so its less severe in the morning.

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
With red wine food always helps. To be honest, SWIM wouldn't bother drink merlot if he wasn't eating with it. Wine headaches are highly inconsistent indeed, SWIM has gotten them on occasion. Generally however, they won't occur if a good meal is eaten beforehand.

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
Red wine causing headaches can be indicative of having migraine headaches. Has SWIM been screened for these? If SWIM has migraines, then little can be done to block the triggers. And red wine is a classic.

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
Swim does suffer migraines. So the thing is that red wine is going to activate these anyway? So swim has to stay away from red wine?As much as he enjoys it it really isn't worth the pain.

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
smurf has found that taking 2 good strong headache tablets adcodol or myprodol after drinking the last bit of wine when going to sleep works amazingly. you wake up feeling fine, just a little groggy. cliche, prevention is better than cure. try it n let us know.

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
With swim these headaches come on rapidly.Often after the first few sips of wine.Perhaps if swim took aspirin before he drank wine?Swim may try this but the headaches can become so bad swim isn't sure if this experiment is worth it.

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
If this is a migraine, aspirin wouldn't put a dent in it. Also taking aspirin with alcoholic beverages is like getting down on all fours and begging for a lovely case of alcoholic gastro-enteritis. Perhaps even a nice ulcer if the behavior were to continue.
Here is a few questions to ask SWIM about the headaches. 1. Do they seem to center in a specific part of the head each time e.g. - always behind the right eye? Or on the left side in the forehead? Like that. 2. Does SWIM find their vision disturbed? Does SWIM not want bright lights on around him during the headache? 3. Does SWIM get nauseated with the headache? Does he throw up? Does the headache feel better after vomiting? 4. Does SWIM feel a very negative mental-state during the headache? So bad he will promise God Himself to quit even thinking about drinking or smoking pot or - etc? 5. Can SWIM feel a trigger-like effect where, although he is not yet suffering the headache - he KNOWS it's on it's way? These are about the most useful questions to ask SWIM. From the answers gleaned it will be possible to determine if this is migraine. And, if so, what SWIM should do. |

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
These headaches start in the forehead but then they mainly keep up a steady and painful throb behind swims eyes.Swims state of mind also changes. He will lay in bed and get very negative thoughts all around and also do things he never does normally like lose his temper and even yell at friends and family. And yes swim always knows they are on the way.It starts out very small like pressure in swims forehead when he turns his head or stands up and then they slowly progress into the monstrous and evil things they become.Swim really hates these things, infact they are probably one of the things in life that can make swim the most unhappy.Bright lights and loud noise will indeed make them worse.

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
1. Dehydrate prior to consumption because it allows alcohol to hit hard and then the withdrawal is harder.
2. Take small sips and hold under tongue for 30 seconds for rapid absorption without excessive water 3. Opiate binding with rapid withdrawal causes a reduction in enkelphin peptides that form internal morphine. However, the brain can be taught how to recylcle them by taking DLPA. 4. GABA release from receptors increases norepinephrines, serotonin and acetylcholine. Norepinephrine restricts blood vessels causing pain, excesses of serotonin create light intensification and acetylcholine excesses create excitability in many areas of the braoin which often respond in the form of Alzheimers if alcohol is abused. 5. Hydration during the drinking period allows alcohol to remove steadily but consistently. In addition, red wine has a lot of sugar that is low after alcohol is gone. Dehyrdate, sublingual, space water out between glasses, purchase the safe dlpa for pain relief, eat sugar afterwards. Final Note: Take an A to Z Multivitamin for nutrient losses due to alcohols power over water in the body and the vitamins have enzymes that create dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. Also NSAID's which are anti-inflammatories are good for blood vessel inflammation but must be taken one hour afterwards to avoid liver and kidney malfunctioning |

Orchid, do you experience headaches every time you drink wine, or only sometimes when you drink wine? Do you drink red wine or white wine? |

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
Orchid: You have described "Classic Migraine." The bad news is that there is nothing you can really do about them. They are genetic. I'll wager your mom or dad had/has them. Or their mom or dad did. Now for the good news: They usually stop happening at some age. My dad's went away when he was 36 - never to return. Mine vanished at 25.
If one gets these only when drinking red wine - the solution is simple: No red wine. Finis. Period. If these happen at other times, get ass to doctor who understands migraines. A migraine is caused by vaso-dilation in the brain in a specific (each person is different) area. The pulse through the widened blood-vessel explains the pulsing pain experienced. Treatment consists, usually, of taking a vasodilator such as Sumatriptan (which is a derivative of n,n-DMT), ergotamine (Lysergic acid derivative), or narcotic analgesics if these don't work. A home-brew remedy is caffeine citrate. This is made by squeezing a lemon into a cup of strong, black coffee - Yuck! But it does help. For some it works perfectly. Beware of idiot doctors out there who want to experiment on SWIM. One wanted to put Bongo in a hospital for a month and try lithium carbonate. You can rather guess what Bongo offered to do to that moron. Vasoconstrictors first. Then, if those don't work, narcotics. Bongo had to take Tylenol #3's at the first indication of migraine. But to reiterate: If these only happen when red wine is consumed - don't drink red wine. It's not worth it. Migraine is so painful that red wine could land SWIM in an ER with a needle of Demerol in his ass. It's not worth the buzz, baby. Trust Bongo on this point. Now go Google 'Migraine.' |

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
Well me guesses that SWIM now knows which end is up when dealing with these headaches. SWIM is lucky they only happen when SWIM takes a classic "trigger." I would suggest further reading on migraines as there are many other things that can act as a trigger. But on the other side of the coin there is every chance that the reaction to red wine will go away at a later date. Maybe in a year or two - try again.

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
Swim really does hope this goes away.Swim would like to be able to enjoy its tasty goodness again.Maybe in a year or two swim will try again.Swim has been doing some reading on migraines and it definitely sounds like they could be the culprit. One thing that confuses swim a little is that he suffers some of the symptoms of migraines, cluster headaches, and sinus headaches. It is abit boggling really, though the majority of what swim suffers are the classic migraine symptoms.Another thing swim doesn't understand is why only red wine is a trigger and not white wine or liquor?

Re: How to stop redwine headaches before they start?
Yup^^^. Theories abound - but they are theories. No one can say for certain why this is a trigger. Along with chocolate for some people. Many others. This has been researched to death, and we're no closer to a definitive answer today than we were 10 years ago. Though the guy/girl with the latest theory would spit in my face.
