A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good? (Centurion)
A friend of mine came back from Canada and said they do this: 100 shots, one a minute, and said we should give it a go. I assume a shot is 25ml and the beer is 5%.
Questions: 1.) Have you done it? 2.) Is it any good? I.e. is it a nice way to get drunk? 3.) How drunk does it get you? To be honest I'm doubtful if this is a worthwhile way to drink, but I'd like to hear about peoples' experiences. |

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good?
This is the extended version of the "Power Hour", where you generally would have a mix made of one minute excerpts of songs and drink a shot glass full of beer each time the song changes.
Power Hours are ok, but sometimes you get funny feelings in your stomach and possibly have trouble with excessive belching or hiccups from taking so many consecutive shots. Regular drinking (or even chugging) is easier and feels better so far as your body is concerned. If you do a 100 minute round you will probably be feeling fairly nice by the end of it, maybe somewhat drunk depending on your tolerance. One shot = 44.36ml One avg. can of beer = 12 fluid ounces = 354.84ml 100 * 44.36ml = 4436ml / 354.84ml = 12.5 cans of beer (approximately) So this could get you a bit tipsy or it could get you fairly rambunctious, depending on weight, tolerance, how much you ate that night, etc. Also, you should keep in mind that I used the North American measurement for beer cans, and where you are the can sizes may vary and you may have a different understanding of how drunk so many cans of beer would get you (plus you'd have to change the calculations a bit). I guess Power Hours are worth trying (though without the music its pretty boring / annoying to keep checking the time), but they aren't especially great. My kitty never was especially enamoured of them, and would rather play other drinking games if he is going to drink in an atypical manner. |

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good?
From experience this normally leads to quite drunken times, although it depends on how big a "shot" is (it changes whether in the UK or America.)
Generally we just agree to take a mouthfull, then you can slightly adjust it depending on your body size or alcohol tolerance. It does get a bit boring though constantly clock watching, tbh i'd think of better drinking games, or just enjoy yourself and have more of a party, not just a sit down and drink. This basically just re itterates what was said above.

I can't imagine trying to do this without a specially prepared music mix or something else to help you tell the time. I would easily get bored to shit and just start chugging after not too long of trying to look at the clock every minute or so to know when to drink. Way too tedious.

In the UK we call it a Centurion.
Quite popular with us students, not everyone can handle it

Now I think of it, I'm not really much of a fan of drinking games at all these days. Is there actually a good one? |

Nah it's something you do as a group so the fun is in waiting and then all taking a shot together.
Eventually those that can't handle it drop out and you're left with the remaining survivors. Try it out next time you have shit all to do

Nobody's rather confused on this "strategy" talk, why not just drink what you want, when you want, until your good? This doesn't even have some sort of game aspect to it. Maybe nobody is getting old...

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good?
since shots are usually 1oz, then that would be 60oz of beer in an hour, which is 5 beers. would probably get you goin' pretty good considering how fast you're drinkin, but swim's never timed how fast he's drank, and just chilled with his drink, no matter the type. but to make a game out of it you could go every minute with a couple friends, and the person who lasts the longest wins.

![]() We would use wine, peach or coconut shnapps or strong cider, and not do a shot, but a mouthful, basically a tall glass had to be gone in 4mins, ie 4gulps. |

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good?
I did this once.. Only with Micky Finns and various other spirits after that had ran out. I'm not sure what it would be like with beer, but the version we played was horrible. I'm very competative, and had to win, mind you.
Got up to 45 shots. It was unpleasent, I was comatose by 9pm, waking up now and again to vomit heartily. Not good. So yeah, just a warning. I wouldn't reccomend doing it with spirits and stuff. Just beer. But then I couldn't see it being more pleasurable than having just a sit down drink... Unless there was some sort of prize for the winner =D |

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good?
swims friends used to play 'heres some cheers son' sit in a circle, make a couple of joints, for every 3 people use a can of beer/cider whatever. take a sip and pass it to the left and say heres some, the next person says cheers son, pass the joint round, keep opening new beers to refresh the empty ones and get pissed (pissed in english means drunk)

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good?
Swim thinks it is quite a fun game, though there are many rules. The correct way to do it is ban players from urinating or vomiting, or they lose. Though when Swim did it, it is much more enjoyable if you let people urinate at least, then they have to play catch up when they return.
Swiy will swallow a lot of air so expect to feel bloated and burping a lot. Swim managed 196 shots, just 4 away from the double centurian (in the UK it's The Centurian Challenge), before throwing up into and filling a 4-pint pitcher. Swim's sibling managed over 200. |

Centurian
Hi, SWIM proposed doing a "centurian" this evening to his friends - i.e. 100 shots of beer in 100 minutes. They'll probably use Stella or something strong-ish, which I worked out at about 13-14 units of alcohol in 1 hr 40 mins.
swim's friend looked up 'centurian' on wikipedia and mentioned loads of regional variation, such doing a shot of vodka for every "nth" shot, or doing a shot of beer a minute until an entire 24-pack is consumed, or doing all the shots wine or vodka etc etc you get the point. what are other people's experiences with centurian? |

I have to say, I find the slew of "Competitive Drinking" threads recently rather tiresome
And I can't say "UTFSE" because you spelled it wrongly, and so wouldn't have found the existing thread! Merged Last edited by Jatelka; 09-07-2009 at 07:21. |

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good? (Centurion)
In my parts they call this game 'The Century Club'. Yes it can be boring at first, but once people start getting intoxicated the minutes pass very quickly! Insert hardcore rules of taking 2 shots if you don't drink exactly on the minute, and a mandatory beer chug for bathroom breaks, and people can get sloshed very quickly indeed.
In reference to Jatelka's post I agree that on a forum that stresses safety and information sharing alot of discussion about a subject that may seem 'juvenile', or have no real informative value, can get repetitive fast. However all work and no play make swimmers very boring indeed, and although such activities are usually done by the younger College year masses, It can be fun for older members to reminice and share stories of their 'wilder' days. After all story telling and alcohol consumption go hand in hand. And the history and culture of drinking games-and lets face it they are all pretty much competetive in nature-date back to many years before Christ, in both eastern and western societies. Cheers! |

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good? (Centurion)
Power hour can be great fun, its not competetive at all, at worst if someone cant hack the full 60 minutes they will get heckled a bit for fun, its more about battling through the minutes with friends instead of trying to out do anyone. Usually better to have a beer or two before playing to get the stomach prepared , i agree the bloated feeling is worse than the actual intoxication. About 2 litres an hour can can be rough on the stomach if a swimmer is used of drinking slowly/slower.

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good? (Centurion)
Swim and his friends do this all the time up in VT. We call it the century club. It's a step up from the power hour (shot a minute for an hour). It gets you drunker than you'd think. Swim did a two hour power hour and was pretty fucked up. It worked out to be like 11 1/2 beers and two hours.
There's an app from iTunes that changes the song every minute, swim just uses that and watchs the Celtics game for example and just drinks as it goes on. It doesn't come off to swim as a good drinking game, but as a very good was to get trashed with minimum effort. |

Re: A shot of beer / cider every minute for 100 minutes: any good? (Centurion)
SWIM loves doing power hours as a pre-party starer, but usally stops at the half time max.. he does the "normal" one hour max. never more than that.
the problem for him is the amount of fluid that gets into his belly, he usually prefers to drink "hard stuff" in 40/60 mixes, but.. this one IS nice. better & more timesaving than most drinking-games that take ages for people to get drunk or they get wasted immediately. this is a good balance. |
