Common Lookalike Liberties in UK

Hey, Swim went looking for some shrooms today and appart from reading on this forum and using alot of shroom websites doesnt really know much about mushrooms that look like liberty caps in the UK.

Appart from galerina what other mushrooms that are poisonious can look like liberty caps ?

Also how common are P. pelliculosa and P. silvatica in the UK ?

Swim found some that looked more like P. pelliculosa than liberty caps and wasnt sure on how common they are.

Swim knows he should atleast purchase a book on the subject and will getting round to doing so, but he is doing a spore print with the mushrooms just now with ones he thinks are mid aged.

One last question, some shrooms he found were white and small, but were growing in the clusters of the liberty caps, could this be what baby caps look like or is it a completely diffrent mushroom ??

Thanks

Dammit - get a book, take a course, and don't play Russian Roulette with SWIM's life.

Spore prints are good. A 400X microscrope is excellent (pore at apex).

Mycena Sp. are a common mistake. Along with Galerina Sp. and Coprinus Sp. And let's not forget Conocybe Sp. - which could also kill a SWIM.

Yup, SWIY might want to consult someone who's studying mycology at the very least. There's also the "follow the guinea pig" idea which is when you eat the same type that have worked for someone else who delved in and took the risk. Not perfectly recommendable exactly.

Re: Common Lookalike Liberties in UK

i'm new to the site but as for whether pelliculosa and silvatica are common- they DEF are in west yorks, at least! Far more common than liberty caps which are so overpicked it takes an hour to get 15 mushrooms in what once were mushroom meccas last time i picked..bah.

Hi,

SWIM found a group of mushrooms and picked just a few for the sake of learning, here's a photo (their stems were actually much longer):

To SWIM they look like psilocybe semilanceata, but SWIM is unexperienced. Could they possibly be any of the poisonous species?

Not liberty caps I'm affraid they look too delicate at the base of the cap and no sign of a nipple on top (although a little hard to tell)

Re: Common Lookalike Liberties in UK

That's a lovely batch of Coprinus Sp. SWIM has thar. Some Coprinus have a disulfaram reaction with alcohol (antabuse). One wouldn't die - not trip. But one might wish they were dead. Yuck! Others can be delicious in salads and omelettes. But if you don't know which is which - stay out of the fields before you poison yourself and/or friends. Nothing says idiot better than having a pal ending up needing a liver transplant.

Thanks for your replies.
SWIM did a spore print and they stained brown which confirms they're no good.

Toxic mushrooms that look similar to Liberty Caps?

Was just wondering if there are any mushrooms that grow in the same environment as caps that SWIM should worry about when picking this season?

An name should be enough then SWIM can research from there if necessary!

Thanks!

They don't look much like libs though, do they? Unless you're colour-blind.
