Snorting - snorting Focalin XR

Hey all,
Today SWIM was prescribed Focalin XR(dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride) 10mg daily and he tried to snort one pill since he had nothing to do today that required attention.
He opened the capsule and crushed the little balls as well as he could. SWIM has no experience snorting anything so he just split it into 4 lines and did 2 lines per nostril snorting as hard as he could while blocking the other nostril.
The problem SWIM is experiencing is that he can taste a lot of the powder dropping down his throat. What did he do wrong?

That's called the "Drip". It happens whenever someone snorts something.

It will likely help if swiy sniffs with less force, just enough to get the powder up there. The goal is to aim for the lining of the nostril.

This is the first time swim has heard of dexmethylphenidate, his assumption would be that its stronger than methylphenidate. But in his experience the diffrence in effect between snorting methylphenidate and taking it orally is slight, and probably not worth the damage to the nose tissue.

Snorting dexmethylphenidate produces a strong high. Its far better than methylphenidate, which my panda can't understand why its compared to cocaine. Focalin is far closer, but still quite different. More euphoric than amphetamines for my panda, closer to cocaine, but its not as fast a rush and it seems to be spread out more (the effects).

However, my panda would recommend taking them orally. Focalin actually works quite well for his attention problems and doesn't seem to have many side effects for him. Snorting it is very pleasurable, but you are at greater risk for addiction and you may find the therapeutic doses not as effective, which doesn't leave you very well off. If you actually need the medication to treat a disorder why mess with it? It will become ineffective and you'll be screwed. Find something else to play with if you plan on keeping using this for medicinal purposes.

SWIM thanks you for the advice Bajeda.
SWIM says sorry if he sounds like a junkie, but he was excited to get his hands on this since it was his first upper he's ever used. Since SWIM is home for the summer, focus isn't quite a priority at the moment.
SWIM's experience went as follows (note SWIM took 1.5mg alprazolam 3 hours before this):

0:00 - crushed and snorted 10mg dexmethylphenidate
0:15 - SWIM is experiencing minor stimulation
0:30 - very slight mood lift
0:45 - SWIM snorts another 10mg dexmethylphenidate
0:50 - very short, but great rush of energy
1:00 - mood is lifting and stimulation is persistant
1:15 - rush is seeming to be dying
1:30 - rush gone but SWIM is still very stimulated
3:00 - SWIM is feeling about baseline at this point

SWIM enjoyed the experience, but was expecting more euphoria or atleast the equivalent mood lift of a small hydrocodone dose. SWIM stayed awake all night; it is now 9:50am and SWIM is finally beginning to feel tired. Not a bad experience for the first time. SWIM hopes he will feel more of a rush without alprazolam in his system. After some rest swim will take the recommended 10mg dose orally.

There is a mood lift, but In swims opinion not like hydrocodone. Swim also thinks taking that much alprazolam will surely negate some of the rush as alpra is a benzo/downer and your speed is obviously a stimulant.

Also, swim really thinks you shouldn't bother with snuffing it. It's not like oxycodone where the bioavailability goes considerably up if you snuffit. if they are time release break them up and parachute it. chances are it will even last a bit longer this way.

SWIM has been using 10mg of dexmethylphenidate orally each day and so far he notices some positive effects for only a max of a couple hours if that. After that he feels very irritable. Otherwise, he just notices that he stays awake longer than usual. When his doc increases his dosage to the expected 20mg can he expect the irritability to subside?
In a month SWIM will be seeing his doc again, but she has already has made it very clear that she is against prescribing amphetamines so SWIM isn't sure what else she will do. SWIM would rather have dexmethylphenidate than atomoxatine or whatever else.

How can she be against prescribing amphetamines yet have no problem with the methylphenidates?? Its not like there is a massive difference between them, and given that people can react very differently to both stimulants and may need to try several types before finding the one that works best for them, it sounds like she is probably preventing a number of her clients from receiving effective stimulant medication treatment due to her own prejudices.

If the side effects from dexmethylphenidate start to outweigh the benefits it may be a good idea to change doctors to someone more willing to work with different medications should swiy want to experiment to find something that works. If he has already tried the amphetamines route and methylphenidates work better for him, then np.
