Dog ate 1 oz. of Amanitas
So SWIM was taking a vacation in Florida last week and forgotten than he had ordered some Amanita's via eBay. When the mail came and SWIM was not present, SWIM's roommate put the manilla envelope on his bed. SWIM's dog found the bag and ate the entire ounce of mushrooms. SWIM was not present for this (still in Florida), but his roommate said that the dog was puking and shitting all over the carpets and foaming at the mouth. That's all I know that happened, but she seems to be fine now. Scary though, SWIM would have been very sad to lose his dog to something as stupid as that.

Glad your dog was ok, he wasn't in any danger from the mushrooms themselves. |

Re: Dog ate 1 oz. of Amanitas
Well, I put it in this folder because I figured wherever else I put it, it was going to be moved. And the few times I've told this story I got some laughs, so this seemed decent. Either way, the point of the thread is the point of any other thread. Looking for similar stories or warnings from cautious SWIMmers... whatever. Either way, I know Amanitas do have some toxins in them, I'm just wondering how my dog survived...

Re: Dog ate 1 oz. of Amanitas
Even wikipedia states that Amanitas are dangerous for dogs, even if there isn't the citation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanita...erina#Toxicity This seems work not for cats. I didn't know anything about pets and amanita, and left pantherinas for hours on the table. But my cats didn't seem attracted at all. Luckly. |

Luckily it was not Pantherianas, is was muscaria. I'm sure it wasn't good for her, I'm just glad I didn't lose her, that would have been a horrible way to go.

Re: Dog ate 1 oz. of Amanitas
It's not mushrooms you have to worry about a cat eating its tylenol. One tylenol can kill a cat.

Re: Dog ate 1 oz. of Amanitas
SWIM couldn't help but notice this post and ask if SWIY followed his dog around with a little bag, as chong said in one of the best comidies of all time "Up in Smoke," "Because the little F'er ate it." If so did YOU call it "Labrador" MAYYYUN?
If SWIM put some Amanita's on a stick and grilled them along with some cannibus (and SWIM Inhaled) I wonder if it would be called "Magic Fried Stick" instead of "tied stick." I hope someone at least some SWIMMERS knows to what I'm referring to and find this post also a bit humourous. Make sure to find SWIM's other post because SWIM was a little suprised to find this Genus of Fungi as being used to SWIMM .........in mirages. |

Re: Dog ate 1 oz. of Amanitas
Is it wrong that I read that then could picture the dog and laughed to myself!? I can see a funny side in anything though, no matter how sick or twisted it is. At least the dogs okay now, which is the most important thing. I wonder how that must have felt to the dog... that is some crazy shit!!

Re: Dog ate 1 oz. of Amanitas
Alright just for future reference and SWIM knows this from SWIMs undergrad internship at a large/small animal vet and because she's always owned German Shepherds(who are occasionally known for eating what they shouldn't. If a dog ingest something bad AND you've caught it recently(within 30 minutes or so):
Give the dog 3-to5 mL's per 20-pounds of standard 3% household Hydrogen Peroxide per 20 pounds of body weight. That should induce vomiting within 5 minutes or so; if not it's alright to repeat the dose ONE time in emesis hasn't occurred within 10 minutes or so. If the dog has ingested anything caustic, that's a CONTRAINDICATION to induce vomiting. Don't make a dog that's gotten into anything like most househould chemicals(drain cleaner, lyes, most cleaners etc) vomit because the chemical will not only burn delicate esophageal tissue of the way down, it will do so on the way back up as well. In those cases, contact your vet or animal poison control for advice. But things like pills, chocolate, small coins, toys, horse wormer(mine did this), are perfectly fine to induce emesis for. Always follow up immediately with your vet however. In fact, one should be on the phone with their vet soon after giving the first dose of peroxide. SWIM actually keeps a rather large pet emergency care box at her house including such things as dosing syringes, themometer, peroxide, activated charcoal, orogastric tubes(only if you know how), styptic, dog aspirin, ear care stuff, eye care stuff, and so on. Always better to be prepared than caught short-handed in SWIMs opinion. |

Re: Dog ate 1 oz. of Amanitas
Yeah honestly.. swims first thought was WHY didn't someone take the dog to the VET. You would really sacrifice a pets life because you don't want to take your dog to the vet? I mean you could always just say you were at a party with him and he ate someone else's product.. you don't have to admit it was yours.

Re: Dog ate 1 oz. of Amanitas
Even so, most vet's(having been to vet school) have done their fair share of "experimentation" in their day. If it's pills, the vets not going to question the validity of a prescription. If it's shrooms, you grow recreationally or the dog ate it on a walk. Chewed up and partially digested isn't going to be the easiest to ID...add to the fact that most vets aren't anything close to mycologists..and if they are, there's prolly a reason why, LOL.
