Alternatives to Codeine on SSRI?

Hi guys,

SWIM is on the SNRI antidepressant Effexor, so his codeine attempts (up to 300mg+ without tolerance!) had absolutely NO effect whatsoever.

SWIM is really bummed out about this, and is wondering if any kind SWIY knows of anything that would work while on an antidepressant? Preferably not too hard and similar to codeine.

Sorry for posting this on two forums, SWIM just thought it would be more appropriate to post on a general opioid forum since codeine is no longer what SWIM wants anymore

Thank SWIY

Re: Alternatives to Codeine on SSRI?

SWIM is taking Ciprilex (a SSRI) and has found that codiene also had no effect either (mind you this was in the forms of tylenol 2 and tylenol 3 prescribed for pain). Hmmm, it may have something to do with the anti-depressant? Good question.

SWIM has found however, that Percocet (not sure of spelling) is effective. SWIM has only taken this for pain after surgery as prescribed. Unlike the codeine, percocet got rid of the pain and made SWIM high as well.

Re: Alternatives to Codeine on SSRI?

SWIM is taking both Lexapro 40mg and Wellbutrin XL 450mg and has had no problem either with codiene or hydrocodone. Currently SWIM is taking Kadian 60mg twice a day, which is a controlled release morphine similar to Oxyconton, for deginerative disc disorder and osteoartheritis and has found this to be very effective for pain. SWIM has never taken Effexor and doesn't know why it would interfere with codiene but perhaps a different antidepressant would help with this problem.

Re: Alternatives to Codeine on SSRI?

Please use chemical names.

Cirpalex & Lexapro=escitalopram
Effexor=Venlafaxine
Wellbutrin=Bupropion
Percocet= Acetaminophen+oxycodone

SWIjb3008, some people's bodies are less able to process codiene. This could explain these effects. Its possible that there is some interaction swim has never heard of before.

SWIcncs2ci, swim would say most people dont get much effect taking t2 and t3 preparations of codiene as prescribed.

Re: Alternatives to Codeine on SSRI?

I can't see any reason why SSRI/SNRI anti depressants would affect the way opiates work, they act on different site in the brain.

As for something similar, well dihydrocodeine is about as close to it as you can get, Wikipedia says it is 100 - 150% as strong as codeine. I think it would be closer to 150% which would mean 100mg of codeine is the same as 150mg of dihydrocodeine.
