Urine tests at doctor checkups?

SWIM was mildly paranoid about having to piss into a cup at the doctor's while there for her college immunizations. She would definitely have THC in her system. These quotes from the thread http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42854 set her heart at ease:

So SWIM was just wondering, what do they test for in urine samples?

It actually is illegal to have in your blood in most states. Its considered possession(so theoretically you could be charged for GHB, as it is naturally produced, but it would be thrown out). Although I do not know what they test for, it will probably be protected under doctor-patient confidentiality.

Seriously. Damn. So should SWIM be worried / borrowing friend's urine? Or is it under that doctor-patient confidentiality that they won't report it?

Re: Urine tests at doctor checkups?

Unless there is a reason to test your urine for drugs, they wont waste time or money on it and I'm pretty sure you would have to agree to such tests.

As for the other question, where I live it is illegal to have drugs in your system, my gurl was recently convicted of consumption, though I think there is much more leniency with this than with possession. Even if your test came back positive there is no way your Dr would take give it to the police, the only way you could be convicted of consumption is if it is a police ordered urine test and there are protocol that must be strictly followed for it to be admissible in court.

It may be different where you live but I doubt it.

SWIM has been asked for urine before, seemingly just part of the checkup. Other people have suggested that it may be because SWIM doesn't go in for regular checkups, so when she does they test urine..? It might also be because SWIM still goes to a pediatrician at 18?

Your response was reassuring, though. Thank you :]

"So SWIM was just wondering, what do they test for in urine samples?"

They check for many things other than drugs.

Yep. And any doctor who breached patient/doctor confidentiality - unless hired by the government and you were court-ordered to pee in a jar - would be a lawsuit-waiting-to-happen.

Re: Urine tests at doctor checkups?

Well on one hand people are protected. But on the other hand they are not. Sor example I know of one case were in the USA a man went to the doctor for an exam. In the case history the man admitted that he drank 12 beers a day. Well the next thing you know the guy is getting a letter in the mail from the Dept of Motor Vehicles saying he cannot drive because a doctor said he is a danger to drive. Like if he had uncontrolled epilepsy. The doctor actually called motor vehicles and reported him. Well the guy fought it and had to have one of those computers installed in his car to check if he was drunk. So in theroy people may not be as safe as they think. But this type of thing is unusual. For example let's say a parent tested positive for cocaine at the doctor. Well the doctor is a mandated reporter for child endangerment. So in theroy a physician could call child protective agency on the parent and they could make a case that the child was in danger from the cocaine using parent. So there are possible loopholes in the law.

Yes, but most doctors are not going to want to send all their business to jail. They are in the business of making money.

Re: Urine tests at doctor checkups?

That case of the man who had his license fucked over was in Ohio. It was covered in this forum some time back. In Ohio the doctors are politically adept: God on our side! And the judge will protect them for "doing the right thing, boy." It's either do that, or have your house burned down by those who demand you learn of the love of Jesus - or be nailed-up and set on fire.

Re: Urine tests at doctor checkups?

SWIM has undergone mandatory urine tests when orderedto by the courts years ago...SWIM had bail conditions that stated must stay clean of Marijuana!
SWIM was only tested for marijuana(as this was what was arrested for) and passed the test twice.
SWIM was told the test was 95% accurate and that if swim smoked any marijuana in the 6 weeks leading to the test swim would fail and test positive...
swim cut down alot on consumption and exercised alot more but never stopped smoking and passed both tests...!
Obviously there are flaws in these tests!
(swim realises he may have just been lucky etc, please dont take this advice as gospel)
